I have this pic I have been working on for weeks now. I called it "Mighty Bong" It was such a cool pic, I was so looking forward to sharing it. Alas, I saved it yesterday after an addition, seemed to save okay( I waited forever for it to stop saving) closed Bryce. I opened Bryce this morning to add one final thing...gone. It opens as a new blank document. I hate it when that happpens. I do think I saved all of the objects I made/used but doubt I can get the exact same sky settings I had....No, I didn't think write them down as Zhann does..boohoo..I will have to get that notebook now..LOL oh well the trials and tribulations of Bryce..gotta love it! :)

this happened to me too yesterday. I had a rather large file though. 168,800,000 polygons or so, and 256 terrains (talk about a tiling job, sheesh!). anyway, it took a good 5 minutes to save, but when I tried to open it again, same thing. blank document. I was very sad. It took along time to tile all those terrains.

Ouch! That hurts! You both have my empathy, and my sympathy.

This has happened to me so often that I've lost count - I've taken to initially naming the file with a number - e.g. "My Project 1.br5" - then whenever I save it I always use 'Save As...' cos Bryce automatically increases the number - e.g. for my Time Machine I'm now up to "Time Machine 38.br5". Hope this helps.

That's what I do too Hutch, that way if it all goes horribly wrong you just go back to the one before last. I had a similar problem yesterday too, I was making a bonsai tree and had finally got it where I wanted it, then I added something else and Bryce crashed. Trouble was I hadn't even saved the tree and had to start from scratch. Oh well...........8) Catlin

I know the frustration you are experiencing with this... has happened to me before too and it really sucks. I feel for ya. Wade

Anybody look in the Bryce temp folder to see if it might be there, at least a salvagable copy?

Hey cool! Maybe I'll get really organized.

tjohn ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 5:01 AM

I always save 2 files for every project. One with the name and another with bu added to the name (for "backup"). Each time I make a large change I save under the other name than the file I currently have open. Since I've been doing this I've never lost an entire file, just the most recent changes. This might work better for those with limited drive space. The automatic incrementing deal can fill up a drive pretty fast.

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

I wish you would Zhann. I'm always going to get organised and take a note of the settings but never seem to get round to it. Maybe all I need is a few pointers so please post your log sheets to give us an idea. 8) Catlin

tjohn - good idea - I'm darned near to about a gig with my Time Machine projects

Zhann ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 5:01 PM

Okay, because not everyone has MS Excel spreedsheet, I can do an image of each log in jpg format, then you can resize to what you need, I'll include a readme with instructions..... and tjohns idea is good for those with or without the disk space..... I keep written records because if I should have to reformat my hard drive (god forbid) I have a record to fall back on.....(only takes one worm to eat up all your data) ;]
