If you used Max's "Pick Material from Object" to load the material of the imported object you will need to adjust some Material Editor settings. Under Basic Parameters change the shading to Blinn or Phong to remove the facets and then change the Ambient color, and set the Shininess & Shin Strength (Black/25/5 are good starting points). The imported defaults wash the textures out. Reference a known material for nominal settings. This is assuming I understood your question.
You may be better off posting this on the Max Forum.I use Max 3.1 and there are considerable differences I know,but in 3.1 if you add the bump map to the object after youv,e added the diffuse/texture map, then the bump map is displayed over the diffuse map in the preview window blocking it out.This corrects itself when rendering but I don,t know if that is the case in 2.5. (I am assumimg that your building the texture up all on the same module in the material editor)

I tried to make an water like surface skin for a character in MAX2.5 . I imported the obj. file using the HABWARE tools. That works fine but if I apply any bump-map or bump-noise to the surface it does not work. When I render the picture I only get the siluette of the char, it's seems to have no surface at all. By the way, transparency with the character works fine.
