Subject: anyone work with combustion 2 ??

mizombie ( ) posted Mon, 02 December 2002 at 11:22 AM · edited Sat, 25 January 2025 at 7:10 AM

wondering if anyone has any info about working with Combustion 2 from Discreet. I am needing its fire capabilites for my Ghost Rider animation. I have to have a consistent flame going around the head and the tires on the motorcycle. The characters were built in Poser Pro Pack. Or could I use LW for the same techniques ?? I have LW7 but I am not sure about its capabities of fire just yet. If anyne has or knows where I can find some info on the plugins please let me know

sbertram ( ) posted Mon, 02 December 2002 at 11:55 AM

You could also use Impulse Illusion 2.0. That has some nice fire effects for animation. Gosh, you're the second person I've referred to that program today. I should start working for those guys ;)

mizombie ( ) posted Mon, 02 December 2002 at 12:28 PM

is it available for the mac platform ??

mizombie ( ) posted Mon, 02 December 2002 at 12:32 PM

all of the sites I have found say "discontinued product" thanks for the info though

seaturtle ( ) posted Mon, 02 December 2002 at 1:17 PM

Attached Link: http://www.seaturtleproductions.com

You could also use After effects plugins. Echo Fire, Particle fire and a couple of others. That is what I used on my trailer

mizombie ( ) posted Tue, 03 December 2002 at 10:04 AM

awesome work seaturtle. i may look into the AE plugins, they are probably cheaper than the 4k price tag that goes with combustion2. I know I may be sacreficing some effects but, I am on a budget being a student. Where could I find some more info on the AE plugins?? would they be listed at Adobe's website ?

seaturtle ( ) posted Tue, 03 December 2002 at 10:24 AM

http://www.3dlinks.com/software_plugins_after.cfm gives you a list and explanation of plugins

mizombie ( ) posted Tue, 03 December 2002 at 10:37 AM

cool, thank you very much

sbertram ( ) posted Tue, 03 December 2002 at 11:19 AM

awe...you're right...it looks like impulse isn't producing Illusion anymore :( That's really a shame. I'm sorry...it really is/was a great program.

sbertram ( ) posted Tue, 03 December 2002 at 11:20 AM

Oh...I never saw a mac version though, unfortunately

wolf359 ( ) posted Tue, 03 December 2002 at 4:33 PM

i use combustion2 for mac OSX and it now uses all the cool particle effects that were once in illusion. its a great effects compositor that blows away adobe after effects and we have the AE 5.5 pro bundle.

Thanks for the reply's guys. i think that I am going to go ahead and buy Combustion 2 during Xmas. i can get a pretty good student discount so that leaves me witha few other questions. Anyone know of any good boks on Combustion 2 or a good place for tuts to read up on ?? i have searched amazon and Barnes and Noble for books but nothing that I am feel is worthy of the hefty price that comes along with the book.

There's a bunch of tutorials with all the data files on discrete's site. Just look around there (I don't have the exact link).

Entitled "Combustion v2: The On-line WebWarriors Guide" You can read about it here: http://www.mci.dk/combustion or check the review at www.CreativeCow.net (book reviews.) Note that my WebWarrior Book is billed as a Tips & Tricks Guide to provide help to speed up any user and make them more efficient, not just as a beginner tool. Each book also includes a one-year subscription to updates and more Tips. In May 2003, I released (for free download to those who bought the book) another tutorial teaching Motion Graphics. So, my book is a book that "keeps on giving." 2) Realeased in Late JULY 2003 is the Hot New "Advanced Combustion training DVDs " -- I have reviewed these and they are REALLY GOOd - well wothy the investment. In the four DVD set there are 6 1/2 hours of material -- Three Combustion power users/trainers, Lee "Rod" Roderick, Gary M. Davis, and Ken LaRue teamed up to teach, advise and guide you through 15 lessons of real world projects for the advanced user. This is the first volumne in a planned series.. Check them out at http://www.thestreetproductions.com 3) There is a very good (and long) DVD / VHS Video set with 14 hours of training and tutorials . It is the most expensive trainign out, but you do get 14 hours (!) This is also taught by Ken LaRue (see above) and is available from Technical Animations (http://www.techanim.com) 4) Coming up in the later this year a new book available on www.amazon.com called combustion ground rules by Todd Petersen. The Table of contents for his book is scheduled to be: Chapter 1 Introduction to Post Effects - Chapter 2 Introduction to the Combustion Interface - Chapter 3 Quick Start Tutorial - Chapter 4 Paint 101 - Chapter 5 More on Paint - Chapter 6 Compositing 101 - Chapter 7 More on Compositing - Chapter 8 Working with Audio - Chapter 9 Integration with MAX - Chapter 10 Integration with Edit - Chapter 11 Advanced Compositing - Chapter 12 Advanced Compositing 2. Gpo to amazon.com to read more. 5) There is an older 90-minute Combustion v1 VHS Training Tape with advanced subject material available at http://www.videoblurb.com. It has received excellent reviews and covers color correction, keying and more. Anyway, there's FREE TRAINING and stuff you can BUY... Whatever you do . . . . Keep Combustin' ! Wondertouch has purchased the rights to Impulse Illusion. They are putting out version 3.0. They have demos of the various versions on their website. http://www.wondertouch.com - Mike

Wondertouch is a 1 man company - the creator of Illusion. Allan is amazing. His program - hardly requires the manual- save for learning alpha channel. It is amazingly fast to create profesional quality. 90% of the time- is spent not creating new FX, but deciding which FX you already made even better. Pack
