Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 07 11:07 am)
Try deleting the RSR file that sits in the poser folder...poser 4/ poser.rsr thats often the reason for poser not starting but when you re-install it doesn't over write the old one (if i recall correctly)..so delete it then install, then if you haven't before, make sure you have the latest patch...Steve
You should contact Curious Labs about this. If this happened after formatting your drive again, it will probly happen again. Sounds like theres something conflicting with Poser. I have Pro-Pack on Win ME and have only had simular problems do to a virus. My advise is dont re format your whole drive. Thats the very last thing you should have to do. Have you tried uninstalling Poser (restart and make sure no files are in the Poser folder) and then installing again? You can put your runtime somewhere else as back up and move files back after install. This is when it would be nice if they had made it possable to only install program files instead of 600 megabytes of stuff that is allready there.
???? This is wery odd i have a backup of poser on a other drive and it works fine now ??? but it dident for just 5 minuts ago. Can i move just the program files to my C:Poser 4 would it work so ???
Try it :o) Isn't it typical? As soon as you ask for help, the problem goes away. Same thing happens when you call support, and (even worse) When you've made someone make a house call! G

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.
If you have Poser 4 and the Pro Pack, make sure your shortcut is starting ProPack, not Poser 4. I had a problem similar to this where Poser would take a VERY long time to start (like 10 minutes). Peggy

ya know- several of us have been having probs with pro pack and p4 over the last week- several poser power users. mine wouldn't render ANYTHING to new screen, only to the display screen. I've talk with others who have had simular and mixed problems this last week. and yes, when we put P on another drive they all seem to work just fine. makes me wonder......
It's a folder I created, on my HD called Poser QFix. All it is... is a copy of just the program files from a clean, fresh install of Poser(plus patches, and memory patches). No runtime, read me's,or PDF's,and it is only 14.5 Meg. Awhile back,I had the "can't open Poser" problem, the "not enough space(or memory)to render",the large renders that stopped before they were done, and the general slow down of Poser. I found when those problems happened, all I had to do was DELETE the program files inside of Poser, and replace with the fresh ones. Now I don't wait for a problem, I just do the delete/replace about every two or three weeks(takes 30 sec),and consider this as routine maintenance. I can notice Poser runs faster and smoother right after doing this, and I never, NEVER, have these common problems anymore. This goes along with what Steve said about the rsr files, but Ive sometimes noticed a change in the Poser exe,and dil file size alsowhich indicates possible corruptionso replace them all. BTW>All your preferences and settings are located in the runtime folder,so these are not effected. Hope you find this useful. SWAMP
Great idea, Swamp. Think I'll do it right away, but on a CD instead. That way, whatever viruses, vermin and vapors might be floating around the HD can't affect it.

mac,Yes those are the files....but NOT any folders(such as runtime). Do a new fresh install of Poser anywhere on your HD except where your present Poser is installed. Install whatever upgrades, patches, etc., that you normally use....(example:Poser4,ProPack,PPsr3,and memory patch). Now all your files are updated and patched that you are going to copy. Copy just the FILES inside the main Poser folder and put those in a separate folder(named whatever and keep that anywhere you want). You don't copy(or need)any of the folders, tex.or pdf. Now just get rid of that Poser installation(I just manually delete it as Windows gets confused about which one to un-install..always the wrong one). Note:..You have to do this with a fresh install, that you havent used or you defeat the purpose. SWAMP
Thanks swamp, I'm about to format my HDD. Haven't done it for 2 years, so it's about time. I'll be re-installing, and I can back up these files from zero. I usually only keep back-ups o the Poser.RSR, plus all my prefs and a renamed .ini file. I'll try this out. Anything for a quiet poser life. LOL. mac

Poser doesn't send a message to Curious Labs. It accesses the network to look for other copies of Poser running on the same internal network. It doesn't access the internet at all.
