what is the best way to get a realy convincing drawing from a photo of a person without tracing it by hand?

This tutorial may be helpful. :) Not sure if it's exactly what you are looking for but could steer you in the right direction.

This is strange but I have seen this kind of tutorials only in russian! Send me a message if you are interested in translation (it whould be a laisy one! ;-) )
