THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Dun dun dun dun.......Disaster strikes my drive...

Well...I'm not going to get angry and scream etc, however my winter challenge will be delayed slightly...My older hd, the 40 gigger just crashed in a big way. I am extracting the disks and taking them to a specialist to have the information extracted, but this could take all week. Incase you didn't know, I have devoted my 40 gigger to bryce, 37 gigs of bryce/cg... i have an 80gig hd as well, and I just now purchased a 120 gig hd because the others were full... I might just remake the image, I didn't really like it that much, but, I really wanted to do a metaball image (duhh.....) of the first spring water rushing through cracks in the ice it would have been layered in that the water would have a spring background reflected in it while the ice would have a chilling winter sky environment.. I was also going to do some snow etc to fill in the image. sigh another wrench thrown into the clockwork, no bother, good luck to everyone.

Maybe it is time to start backing up stuff on CDs? Just a thought.

Ornlu ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 7:33 PM

I did, but I still lost a huge chunk of data, and quite frankly backing up on cd's sucks. + is expensive and time consuming. And certainly not secure.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 7:34 PM

Poor thing, I do hope your data can be recovered. As for back ups, a DVD recorder is absolutely brilliant 'cos you can get 4.5 gig on one and with all your mega sized images I thinks that's what you'd need Ornlu. 8) Catlin BTW, your a bit trigger happy on the "post new message" button tonight aren't you, I didn't know which post to respond too. lol 8)

It's because rosity is loading really slowly, so I clicked send, and nothing loaded for about 3 minutes, so I clicked it again and left. when I came back there were 2 posts...

Ah, figure out somehow some way...backup backup backup. I've tried to get better w/ backing up...all this after losing all my beginning Bryce work back in March. :( I know the feeling Ornlu...hang in there! Get back with us soon. :) MD

I replace drives every year and so far have not (knock on wood) had a drive failure. As for backing up 37 gigs, there aint no easy way except to ghost to another drive and that's it.

chohole ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 2:41 AM

I feel for you. I have just had a new 120 gig drive installed to hold my bryce stuff mostly, and it has just let me down. Sounded like an alarm clock as I was saving my last WIP to it. I saved it to my old drive quickly and rebooted only to have the PC refuse to boot other than in safe. Got it up now, but methinks the new drive is coming out toot sweet. Back to the drawing board. Hope yours gets sorted and you get your files back OK.

Another point about DVD's is that you can also get double sided DVD's and they take up to 8 gig which sure beats a stack of CD's, or do you remember backing up to floppies?,........sheesh.......just think how many floppies it would take to back up 8 gig. Catlin

Heh..I just finished a project of about 2 boxes of floppy backups from the mid-80's on..;) about 500 or so went on 2 CD's..;) Nothing wrong with backups on CD-R's, as cheap as they are..it's reloading all the skies and mats that gets ya down..;)

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit
