Subject: Site slow

wyrwulf ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 11:27 AM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 11:41 AM

Renderosity has been slow today and yesterday. Not all the time, though. One click will load the page right away, the next click takes forever to load. Every other site I have gone to is working fine.

deemarie ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 12:03 PM

I agree - it has been Painfully slow today and yesterday :[ The downside of doing upgrades the system :) So, just hang in there - Things will be speeding up before you know it :) Dee-Marie

cynlee ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 12:06 PM

yep, ever since last night... i'm on dialup & have never had this kind of problem with the site, ever since messing with the counter, it's either unavailable or just hangs there :( hope you find a solution soon

cynlee ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 12:18 PM

oh hi deemarie... looks like we got our messages in at the same time... thanks for the update... :] will you let us know when it's running smoothly again?

ClintH ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 12:36 PM

We just banned several IP addresses which where running software in an attempt to extract content from the site. I guess they didn't realize how big the site really is, but they were causing problems anyway. Don't know if this was the only issue, but certainly should help. Tim

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 5:50 PM

Well, taking the 10% merchant cut from us was definately not used to improve the site's performance, I guess. ;-) J.

Psst.. wolf.. You smudged the Forum ID from every line except the address bar. DOH! ;0)

OT Whats all that about is_competitor='Y' ????

sirkrite ( ) posted Sun, 14 September 2003 at 7:57 PM

It means you've been taged. ;) Well the site seem to be getting back to normal, I hope. :)

got faster this afternoon, as cynlee said, but its dragging again. Ok, well, if the maintenance will make it run like it did at noon today then I'm all for it. That was the fastest I;ve seen this site and we still had a hord logged on at the time!

mit123 ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 4:20 AM

My last post doesn't make any sense now cos Mr. Wolf has removed his pic. :-(

rcook ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 7:58 AM

mit123: "My last post doesn't make any sense now cos Mr. Wolf has removed his pic." I wouldn't count on that. Here is another screenshot of the same error that can't be "disappeared" like so many posts around here at times. Of course whether this post stays or not ... ;) They don't want you to know that they track info on folks like me, one of their "competitors".

Russ, You may find this hard to believe, but we do have some members (even merchants) that do not have the best interests of Renderosity at heart. Renderosity has an open door policy to merchants who want to sell in our marketplace, but to access our private merchant forum requires consent to a set of guidelines that ensure productive use of that forum. Some merchants have chosen not to agree to these guidelines since it does prevent competitive activity, and thus are not allowed in our private merchant forum. We do flag the member records for those merchants to block forum access and that is the "mysterious" code which has troubled you. Hope this helps, Tim

rcook ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 8:54 AM

Ah, that certainly helps explain it. Thanks. (The extra-thick sarcasm wasn't really needed though.)

bijouchat ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 9:42 AM

Hmmmm. I hope I am not tagged as one of those "that do not have the best interests of Renderosity at heart" (as I'm the person who posted that piccy at PoserPros) I don't have access to the merchants forum because I'm not a merchant. Easy enough reason. :) I would hope that I would, if I decided to be a merchant... though. The whole thing has left a bit of a queasy feeling for me, however. I just post my opinion whatever it happens to be at the time. Its not aimed at undermining Renderosity or any other website. I sometimes complain, but when I complain my reasons are obvious and stated in my posts, and the real fact is I more often give people help and contribute positively to this site... I am much more active in the Carrara community than the Poser one here. Just so people know. I've been a member of this site since 2000, and I've been a pretty frequent customer, that spends quite a bit here, the last time only a few days ago. Undermining this site would not be in my best interests as its in my best interest for this site to stay healthy, but my faith has been undermined quite a bit recently by the recent incident. Everyone follows their best interests, me included. I would say that nobody has Renderosity's best interests at heart, rather they have their own best interests at heart, whatever those may be. Sometimes they coincide with Renderosity, and sometimes not. Expecting the membership to be altruistic towards Renderosity (or any other Poser site for that matter) is really a pipedream. I really want to know if I am considered a troublemaker or not, is what it boils down to... I guess.

bijouchat ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 11:31 AM

"Might be that opinionated peeps get the Y... " I think its just a system check to see if you have the Y, like Russell said elsewhere. (I hope that's the case, and I would like to see an answer) I don't see the point in flagging someone like me. I'm not a merchant, nor am I a site owner. The idea that someone would be watching my moves and distrusts me enough to flag me as a competitor, even though I do not post a negative opinion against R'osity very often and definitely do not compete against them, that is disconcerting. It mirrors a behaviour from a different site owner that I experienced once before... paranoia over the store. I really hate the commercial aspects of this business sometimes... too many of these dustups are about a few nickles and dimes. Bleeds the fun out of this whole hobby... Certainly I have occasionally voiced a negative opinion here, but its always been issues that I have strong feelings about, and would post the same opinion elsewhere in the same situation... at any other website about any other website. A negative opinion from me should not be taken personally. It is what it is at face value, there is nothing nefarious in what I say or do. However I am none too sure about the merchant thing... I may become a vendor in the future. I just want to be treated equally and with respect. Personally I don't get the whole brouhaha over the 50/50 split deal... most of the other brokerages have that split, and R'osity is only coming into line, I think. I'd rather they stay profitable and ride out the bad economy at the moment, than have a too high split bleeding them dry in the long term.

mit123 ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 12:14 PM

Well no more errors or hanging pages but Rosity is still slow today :( In the UK on cable. <------- wonders if he is also... is_competitor='Y'

RHaseltine ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 2:24 PM

Maybe everyone gets a "yes" unless they a) become vendors and b) promise not to compete? It would be safer than defaulting to "no" and then trying to remember to change it for non-signatory vendors.

sirkrite ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 4:42 PM

Clint! Use the picture of you passed out on that case at the convention. ;D (Shows how over worked you are.) Not for nothing Russ, you do tend to come here with an attitude. LOL!

bijouchat ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 5:05 PM

does not make sense... as the 'competitor' thing happened last year, but the merchant forum has been around much longer. I am not a merchant and never have been one here, so why would there be a tag on my name? I've never had access to that forum. I would think its only accessible to members that are flagged as merchants here. On the other hand, many other members here are not merchants either, like Daz team members and the like. They would be competitors however. So somehow, the forum excuse doesn't wash here. Its my opinion that this community is very small, and this "us vs. them" ... are you "loyal" or not mentality is highly destructive. I am a Daz customer, just as I am a customer of Renderosity, as I am a customer of PoserPros, as I am a customer of Renderotica, as I am a customer of 3d Commune, as I am a customer of several software companies, such as Eovia and Curious labs, plus plugin makers for their software products... et cetera ad infinitum. Heck, you could even extrapolate department stores as competitors... or even the grocery store I suppose. They compete for my ever dwindling Euros too. Does the fact that I frequent other places than this one make me "disloyal" ... I hope the hell not! It just means I shop around, that's all. I am loyal to ... me! I think that is normal... ;) Its a consumer behaviour one should expect.

bijouchat - The database query is simply checking to see if the current user should have access to the private merchant forum. Tim

hey bijou..spend all your money here and you can get a tag like mine. ;)

bijouchat ( ) posted Mon, 15 September 2003 at 5:50 PM

LOL! that picture is getting around the net isn't it... I know its my screencap from the colour scheme g ... I need one of those high roller tags too... I certainly spend enough money here lol... thanks Tim - unusual way to term it though, but I guess you got to pick a name. So its always been termed that way I guess?

Yeah - it's been that way since it was implemented. We have several developers around here & they come up with the darndest naming sometimes. :)

The more database intensive gallery viewing options have been disabled at this time in order to get performance back to a reasonable level. This includes MostViewed, MostCommented, and BestRanked. This is temporary until we have this worked out. We appreciate everyone's patience with this issue. thanks tammy
