Subject: Vue Fir Tree Terrain

You know that thing where you can apply fir tree shapes to the terrain in the terrain editor? Well, I seem to recall seeing a tutorial that suggested a way to modify the terrain to poke little holes in the "trees" so that light can shine through. Unfortunately, I lost the link. Anybody know how this is done?
