Subject: Quick poll...what's your opinion?

For those who have used Infini-D 4.5, which interface do you prefer...ID or C3? Also, would you like to see Infini-D revived?

I love Infini-D and prefer its interface. That would be a cool revival. Scott

i have used ID for some years, but i think that the interface of C3 is much better, with no comparison. I share your nostalgic feel, but the times are changed:) BTW, viva infiniD!!

Thank you both for the response. One thing thou TOXE, Infini-D 4.5, put out in 98 has most of the features of C3 @2003. Sure the renderer isn't as good, although with manipulation it could be (see RustBoy). Yes it doesn't have SubD, but just download Wings3D for free. I have spent quite a bit of time with C3 Beta (final version to arrive any day I hope), but I just think that Carrara Studio is really a super "Ray Dream Studio", which isn't a bad thing at all, but Carrara isn't a RD/ID hybrid. If they really wanted to make that they would have taken ID as the core program and added some RD features. By now, 2003, it would be able to compete with LW and much cheaper, with a superior interface (UI is my opinion, but check out some forums and old reviews...many think this way). And, finally I guess I am being nostalgic, but I still use ID 4.5 to this day and I would love to see Eovia (or someone else) bring it back. My hope is if there is enough noise...Eovia (being the great company they are)will listen. It's one man's dream

But stupid metacreations never fixed that bug in ID 4.5 where anti-aliias doesn't work on raytraced objects and they come out all jaggy. The program was so much better when it was owned by Specular. Yeah I was never a raydream fan and the only thing that survived from ID is the particle engine and its interface, texture mapping decals, and some pieces of the modeler. The spline modeler in ID is what really shined - I just can never get my head around the raydream style modeler in carrara. But yeah that is the past. So much has changed. C3 is still a pretty cool program and I like playing with HDRI and some of the newer technologies. Now if my copy would just get here... Scott

I agree alot has changed but I would love to see ID come back with bug fixes and an updated version. If it only had a better renderer (& HDRI) and the bugs fixed, I think it could easily compete with C3. Not to take anything away from C3, I agree it is a cool program but I think the interface, in general, will prevent people from taking it too serious. After all, look at what happened with Bryce and Vue. Vue 4 came out and alot of people forgot about Bryce and use Vue now (as most know there will be no more Bryce for the Mac and I suspect it's future in PC is questionable). I think the interface had a lot to do with it and I think the ID / C3 scenario is the same thing. What if Infini-D 4.5 was made available to download free (kinda like the Wings3D thing vs Nendo). If more C3 users could experience the program, Eovia might reconsider. At least it would be great to import ID scenes into C3.

I started out with RD, then I got a into ID and I found that much that I had learned about 3-D in RD applied very well to ID, even though they ware radically deferent UI. I also found that ID was very intuitive in as much that you could get along just fine without picking up the manual. I like the way you could texture in layers in ID which I miss on Carrara know. I don't se Eovia bringing back ID. I just wish, like you do that more of it got put on the mix when Carrara was concocted.

I'm not even sure that Eovia owns any rights to Infini-D. But if they did, reviving I-D would mean spreading limited in-house resources over yet another product- not sure that is a good idea for a small company. It may be a better idea to incorporate some of I-D's modeling features into Carrara as an additional modeling plug-in.

Chrisdmd ( ) posted Sun, 28 September 2003 at 9:29 PM

Jval, I agree. I am not suggesting so much that they get a whole new product as much as I am suggesting they incorporate the ID interface and some of it's modelling tools, along with C3 renderer etc... The ease of the interface has always been widely accepted and Carrara is much criticized (ie. 3D World)for theirs. One of the great things I loved about ID is that it is simple yet if you dig deeper there is real power to be had. I think C3 is the same to an extent but ID is more user friendly (IMO). I would love to see C4 redesign the interface and workflow alla ID with alot of C3's other great features. If Eovia doesn't own ID than how does one get a hold of ownership. Wouldn't you love to see it like a Blender-type app? I would.

Just a quick note...if you go to the Yahoo group for Carrara, under "database" someone had started a thread about the Infini-D features. Take a look...very interesting. What does Eovia think?
