Subject: Confession of a Poser addict

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 2:47 PM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 9:24 AM

I was recently asked to go to a movie by a friend and had to tell her that I could not go because I had spent my money on Poser items. The conversation went something like this: "I can't go, I spent my money on models." "on what? barbie and ken stuff again?" "IT'S NOT BARBIE AND KEN!" "sure it is, only in the computer, you buy models, clothing, some items to dress up your dolls." "ya well okay in the simplist terms, I spend my money on these things, but I call them art supplies, they help me create my art" "Why not just draw them?" "well, errr.." "If you buy these things doesn't your art look just like everybody elses?" "no, not always...sometimes...err..." "why not be original and make clothes, or paint, or draw." "well I can do that too..." "but you don't that's my point....anyway, want to go see this new play that starts next week?" "I can't there is a sale that is going to end and I have to buy and upgrade to some software, oh and there is a new model coming out..." "your a poser addict" Then I had my moment of clarity, I had turned down not 1 but 2 dates with this woman to further my poser addiction. I had somehow fallen from creative artist to geek collector. Oh the shame of it all. My Poser sponsor says that Turning mydelf over to a higher poser I call "Freestuff" is still relapsing, and now I have to start at step 1 again. I'm sure I am not alone.

nope, definately not alone..lol..i've turned down endless nights out because they drag me kicking and screaming away from my pc..and i buy more clothes for poser than i do for myself..lol

pdxjims ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 3:01 PM

What? You turned down a REAL WOMAN for V3? Duhhh... Don't you know that real women are the best models for new textures??? They work so much better than just painted in Photoshop! Even a couple of face shots will definitly improve your textures!!! Haven't you learned to lure them back to your place with the offer of sex, so you can get modeling pictures for your work? Priorities man! Priorities! Real women help a lot with posing figures too! You just have to train them to move according to X, Y, and Z axis commands! If you're really lucky, she'll dress up in old theater costumes with a snake for those NVIAT pics. Helps tons with realism. Yeah, I love that kinky stuff...

well....it takes a poser addict to understand another poser addict.......lmao!! You guys are to much..lol

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 4:39 PM

On a positive note, if Poser addiction is an inheritable trait, we're less likely to pass it on to the next generation if we keep turning down dates.

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 4:45 PM

The really sad part is when you won't pay $19.95 for a pair of jeans for yourself because that's simply way overpriced, but you think nothing of dropping the same amount for a pair for Vicky and consider it cheap. Kate (walking off muttering to herself about how her poser models are better dressed than she is)

elektra ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 4:47 PM

Kate - so are mine!

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 4:51 PM

My stepfather is really bad about refering to my poser stuff as Barbie and Ken. My response usually goes like this... "Barbie and Ken do not have morph capabilities. You cannot change skin tones, facial features, or hair color. You get them as they are. Mike and Vicky are morphable and can accept different skin textures. Yes, I do dress them up, but I believe their attire is appropriate enough that I am not merely 'playing' with them." Secondly, yes we users get a lot of products from DAZ and 3rd party merchants. So there are some similarities in a lot of images. However, look at it this way. Does anyone get criticized for playing their video games or playstation? You play the same games long enough and you do the same moves as part of your routine. Not only that, but some games are set up that you have to do certain things in a specific sequence. So how is the moves the gamer makes any different from someone else who is playing the same game? Just another way of looking at it...

When the last Star Wars movie came out my husband and I went, he being a bit of a sci-fi addict. Anyway, I couldn't tell you what the movie line was hardly at all, but I could tell you the visuals of the clothes that the central characters were wearing, the colors, the details, the hairstyles, and found myself thinking...gee I could use that prop to get that effect and with this lighting I could do this. I figure that I'm going to need to watch the movie again. Yep, addicted.

dialyn ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 4:54 PM

Dates are not an issue for me, and my models definitely have a better waredrobe than I do (not to mention better houses, vehicles, furniture, etc). I, however, have a better dog. And my food tastes better. I think.

FreeJack ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 5:04 PM

BluesPadawan, I'm with you! Besides being a hopeless Poser addict perpetually short on sleep, when I actually DO go out to see a movie or even watch one at home, I can't just watch it anymore! Oh, and particularly when I watch that Animatrix short film on the DVD?! I've watched it like a million times and I STILL can't help but working out how to get the same effects in my renders. Hopeless. So, suffice it to say: MachineClaw, we hear you.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 5:06 PM

My dog whines because I'm infront of the computer trying to figure out morph dials can just hear him "time for a walk?!...oh guess not, it's Poser time...fine where are those shoes."

Neo10 ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 5:22 PM

I am the same about movies lol. Esp the squar short Final flight os the osiris on the animatrix dvd i was like ooh i could do that and hmm wonder how i could get this lighting and such lol. And i recently saw Underworld and well damn all i did the entire movie in my head was go oooooh man i have hair just like that and i can do that pose and i use this on v3 and oooh i can do this shirt on M3 to make that image lol. The really sad part is when i go to work the entire time i am at work all i can think is ooh i cant wait to get home and turn on poser lol. I even sit there thinking of stuff i can do when i get home lol.

Cruelty ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 5:54 PM

hello my name is Cruelty and I am a Poser addict.....I dream about morph dials and postwork and my husband says I tell him what Vicky did today before I ask how his day went...geez that IS pitiful

hmatienzo ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 5:57 PM

My dog learned to wake my son for a walk while I do beta... And I don't remember HOW many pizzas I have burned while doing just "one more prop"! I don't buy this Ken and Barbie thing, neither... I tell them Ken does NOT have a morpheable weenie!! ;-)

You really don't want to hear my tale of woe. I spent a frightening amount on Poser stuff in the 18 months I have used it, and now I'm (wahoo!) a merchant, I have made a staggering $24. Guess that doesn't quite balance up, does it? Ooops. BTW, any female Poserholics care to stop by for a night of wild passion, please IM me. OK, I'll come clean, I only want a model for my next texture set. :)

This has pushed me over the edge. In the last week I've made over a dozen clothing items for an upcoming package. Tonight I'm going to swill beer from a dark corner in a dark bar and watch attractive people have fun. uh... wait, how is this different... Oh yeah. The surprise factor. They pose on their own. ...my poses are better though (and they enjoy themselves more).

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 6:25 PM

SAM if she is a poserholic she would just use you for your big errr monitor haha. My what a big Runtime you have.... $24 huh? hmmmmm maybe I should become a merchant and make the big bucks woohoo.

sandoppe ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 8:11 PM

Sixus1's Trixie has a better wardrobe than mine!! I don't own one pair of fettish boots!! Ha!! I'm probably not as bad off as some of you....but I'm sure I'm not too far behind! I still go out once in awhile for a meal. But I buy movies and bring them home to watch so I can work on my computer! I buy them so I can watch them multiple times, because I can't pull myself away from the computer to watch them all the way through! And pity my poor cats if someone ever figures out how to create a Poser Persian!! But the toughest part: I telecommute!! Boy is it hard to stay focused on the old day job some days! Someone mentioned dates?? What are dates???

dialyn ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 8:25 PM

As far as I know, a date is from palm trees, and are often added to bread or rice as a sweet fruit, similar to the way raisins are used. Watch out for the pits. I don't know any other kind. But my dog is pulling at my sleeve so I don't have time to research it further.

Turtle ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 8:38 PM

Yes I'm hooked too, My sisters say I'm playing with paperdolls again. I spent-spent-spent- and you know what a lot of stuff I hate it when I get it. Last winter, my husband and I got a great deal on a last min. cursie. Oh NO!! I yell, I haven't bought clothes in years, and I have a computer-Poser ass now, no shorts will fit me. So my sweet hubby order me macho shorts from L.L.Bean over night delivery. ( When he really wanted to say, those thigh's shouldn't be seen in the light of day.) Oh well time for bed.

Love is Grandchildren.

sandoppe ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 8:52 PM

Thanks Dialyn....I can always count on you for a good explanation. Recently a friend of mine mentioned something about a date being "the pits". I guess she didn't watch out! :)

elektra ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 9:09 PM

My PC is in my living room and it faces the TV. Pathetic much? I have it on in the background while I work and only stop when it's something I have to pay attention to while I work, such as HBO's new show, Carnivale. Talk about a show to give you ideas! Also, for the folks who are getting Ken and Barbie ragged on, tell the people to LOOK at the galleries here. I hardly EVER see images that look that much alike. The same themes and plots, but the creativity is so diverse here. It's a visual smorgasboard.

MachineClaw ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 10:22 PM

Got home and letters from IRS AND Student Loans were waiting for me. Went to cry at the computer and the dog went to bite me. it's all fun and games til ya screw with the gov't and the dog.

squid69 ( ) posted Mon, 29 September 2003 at 10:26 PM

Poserholic? I modeled myself so I could date Vicki. Microwave burritoes within arm's length from PC. Red Bulls from an IV drip bag. "Outside" is something from Vue d'Esprit, right?

brynna ( ) posted Tue, 30 September 2003 at 1:36 AM

You know the addiction is bad when you and your fellow Poser addicts start comparing sizes of runtime directories. Largest one I've heard so far is 80 gb. Anybody got anything bigger? You also know you have it bad when your son brings his girlfriend over and all you can think is that you wish you had a copy of her skin texture. Brynna

igohigh ( ) posted Tue, 30 September 2003 at 2:18 AM

Yes, I too am a Poser addict. I spend endless hours playing with digital Barbie dolls while standing in front of a mirror wearing a tutu and bending my body into unprecedented positions .hey, what is my neighbor doing with those binoculars? (did I mention I am male and not gay?)

elgyfu ( ) posted Tue, 30 September 2003 at 2:40 AM

Look on the bright side, it has positive effects too. I used to be awful at getting up in the morning - now I get up at 5 so I can get a couple of hours Posing in. I am the only person in my office who knows what a lacrimal is! I know exactly which bits of a dog/horses legs bend in which direction! I have a reputation at work as 'a bit of a babe' even though I am thirty something and ugly as sin - coz I can make erotic pictures! I can tell you what colour eyes any of my friends has. I don't smoke, drink or swear (much) so I guess Poser is my only vice!

stallion ( ) posted Tue, 30 September 2003 at 7:28 AM

well I tell everyone that I am researching for an animation that I am going to do and I need all this stuff for "REALISM" and "EFFECT" but I truly know it's an addiction code name Stallion and I am a Poser-holic

You might as well PAY attention, because you can't afford FREE speech

shazz501 ( ) posted Tue, 30 September 2003 at 9:21 AM

lol..elgyfu you have poser and don't swear??? i don't believe you..lol

elgyfu ( ) posted Tue, 30 September 2003 at 9:52 AM

I meant that I don't swear EXCEPT when using Poser - it is probably only a matter of time before it drives me to drink anddrugs as well - why didn't Curious Labs include a proper UNDO facillity? :)

Can someone explain the label on the Poser 4 CD sleeve I had to break that read: "Enter Freely And Of Your Own Will"? At least no one here's bragging about how many marriages they've smoked. So far.
