Subject: .DMG extension file? Can it be converted for use on a PC?

igohigh ( ) posted Wed, 01 October 2003 at 11:58 PM · edited Fri, 25 October 2024 at 4:51 AM

OK, I've figured out that it's a MAC Disk Image file and on a MAC it is to be treated as a "disk". Can it be converted (expanded or whatever) for use on PC?

from what I found out about it... its not only mac but its OS X only.. you could start out with DMG converter 1.0 to make it usable with os 9 and then go from there. at least it would increase your odds. also this might be a helpful link..

That might work If I had a MAC to work on, but I am looking for if it can be converted on a PC for use with PC?

I just did a quick search (I'm sure you did too) to see if there's anything & the general answer is no. One or two sites I found were quite rude about Windows, but I put that down to jealousy on their part (816Mhz is the fastest Mac I've seen about)

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 4:25 AM

Look for a program called "MacDrive", that one could be able to open a Mac disc image. 816Mhz is the fastest Mac I've seen about Current top of the line is 2x2GHz. But yes, some Mac fans are pretty good at saying bad things about other platforms for no reason.

oooh I'd love to play with a 2x2Ghz, would that be a G5 then?

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 5:59 AM

Yep, 2x2GHz is the G5. I think the G4s went up to 2x1.25GHz or something in that range.

ok I'll take back my jealousy comment then, I think I might look into getting a Mac for my next machine :)

ps apologies to igohigh for my hijacking this thread

igohigh ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 11:32 AM

No prob. I was just hoping to use Ecstasy's new Mike texture but it looks like this one is for MAC users only. Oh well :*(

nornaddict ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 12:17 PM

yeah I've seen that too, I wonder if there's a nice kind MAC user out there who'd be really kind & convert it for us?

Penguinisto ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 12:52 PM

Sure, I could convert it easily, but I don't have that texture, and it would be rather unethical to Ecstasy for me to do it... same with any other Mac user who doesn't have the item. While I would certainly delete the files, there's no way anyone would know for sure if I did or not, hence the unethical position of doing so. I apologize for teasing, but that was not my intent - just wanted to point out that you'll have to find someone who owns both a Mac AND has the texture already... and they have to be willing to do the conversion. :/ Perhaps Ecstasy can do the conversion for you if you asked real nicely? :)

Cruelty ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 1:06 PM

It is on his page as a free item if that makes any difference, :)

igohigh ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 1:35 PM

Penguinisto is correct, any passing of files without the author's explicit permission would be a violation. And PLEASE don't anyone tick Ecstasy off, I really love his stuff and would hate anyone with a passion who pisses him off to the point of leaving us! Thanks Cruelty, I also IMed him with the question. Usually I can figure these issues out on my own but this one brought me to a dead end, especially now that I am unemployed and no longer can go into work and use their MAC and don't own one of my own.

Cruelty ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 1:56 PM

I agree with you, igohigh about noone pissing him off, he just came back and I would hate to see him go again. I do hope he agrees to converting it I make it a point to collect all his freestuff :)

nornaddict ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 2:01 PM

Sorry guys I didn't think about what I was typing earlier, you're absolutely right about not doing it without Ecstasy's permission, I also wouldn't want to lose all the future wonders coming from his imagination :)
