are there any others out there besides steves? --Essie

Oh, yes. Many. But I suspect you're looking for something in a similar price range ....

LithUnwrap, a freeware UV-mapping utility by Brad Bolthouse

Ultimate Unwrap3D, the commercial version of LithUnwrap ($34.99)

Both utilities are PC-only. The commercial version has a downloadable demo, although all of its save functions are disabled. Try LithUnwrap first to get a better idea of its functionality. It's no longer supported or updated by the author, but he doesn't mind it still being available, as most of us who've used it upgrade to the newer commercial version eventually.

well yes and no...... but every time I go to load steves up it will act like its going to work and then i get an error message saying the programe has to close down for some odd reason and I've done all I can with it and its getting too frustrating to deal with! I have found DEEP UV but that is just too much for me to take in right now......with kids and college I dont' exactly have an extra 800$ on hand lol thanks so much Essie

Essie, Why don't you go to steve's forum and ask him directly. I'm sure he can solve the problem. He's a really nice guy and very helpful. If you've had any problems getting in touch with him by mail or anything, it may be because he had some major problems a while back. His house caught fire and he lost a lot of stuff. mac PS What OS do you have? And did you try deleting and re-installing uv mapper?

PandaPride ( ) posted Thu, 02 October 2003 at 8:51 PM

yes i tried deleting and re-installing, i have windows XP which would explain a lot because nothing seems to work right since I got it. I emailed him last week and never receieved a responce. Well I hope everything is okay for the man.... Losing most of everything you have has got to be rough. I understand that much.. maybe thats why I haven't heard from him. I'll figuare something out. I'm trying very hard to learn how to make my own textures, chracters objects etc.. and I can't seem to do anything without a UV mapper :O( thanks for the help --Essie

Hmmm..... it may be something to do with XP, although I suppose other people use XP and uv mapper. I dunno. What I can tell you is that I tried Lith unwrap at one point and gave up on it. Maybe it's me but I found it almost unusable. For me, steve's is the only one to use. Another thing is, if you're seriously getting into it, you may want to consider uv mapper pro at some point. It costs $50, but it's worth every last cent. Best $50 I ever spent. Obviously, you don't want to get pro until you get the free one working first, but keep it in mind for future use. mac

Try Mapping Magician. You can download it and view a turorial at the link given here. I haven't used it much but it should have the basic functions you need. When Steve gets things settled down, hopefully he can help you with the UVMapper problem. Sounds like possibly a conflict with a DLL or something.

Just wanted to chime in as a WinXP AND UVMapper user. I doubt it has anything to do with WinXP. Mine works fine. It is a known bug that you can't open obj-files with uvmapper by dragging them to the uvmapper ICON OR doubleclicking on an obj if you have associated it with UVMapper. But normal "file - open" from within UVMapper shouldn't give you any problems. At least I've never had any, neither with UVMapper classic nor Pro.

Not wanting to make extra work for you, but was your XP a clean install or an upgrade install over an older Windows - that's a question of how it went on the machine, not which kind of licence it was? Also are your drivers, particularly the video card, XP versions? If you are having problems with lots of things I think there's a problem with the system, and UVMapper is just the miner's canary.

ernyoka, I has that same problem when I tried to associate obj with uv mapper (both free and pro). I wrote to steve and he says he's trying to fix it in the next Prop upgrade. What you can do though (I discovered through this forum) is drag an obj from a folder into the uv mapper window. Very handy at times. mac
