Subject: Win2000 & Poser 5

I am in the process of migrating to Poser 5 on my home PC. A week ago, I also installed a new cpu and motherboard to boost my pc's performance. I would like to know if anyone out there is using Win2000 with Poser 5, and how their system is set up to run Poser at an optimal setting. My pc specs are as follows: AMD AthlonXP 1.8ghz cpu 512mb RAM 128mb Nvidia video TIA Jim

You should be just fine. Windows 95, 98 and ME have problems with handling lots of RAM, but that's not the case with XP and 2000.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering too what I need to set my paging file size to. I know it sounds all too technical, but I just don't want to experience any "out of virtual memory" errors. BTW, I just got P5 a few minutes ago (from Amazon for a steal!), and I noticed in the documentation that the version that was shipped to me had SR1 & SR2 included so I guess all I need to upgrade to is SR3 and I should be cool and groovy. AMD Athlon 2800+ (2 Ghz) cpu 1 gig 333 Mhz DDR RAM 128 Mb GeForceFX 5200 AGP 8X No problems running. Make sure your page file is twice what your physical memory is in your case set it as 1 gig. I had a problem with that when I first installed. Wouldn't let me render. Set the page size right and had no problems since.

Win2000 is perfect for P5. But get MORE RAM - 1GB is optimal. :] Fish

My System AMD Athlon XP2000+ CPU 1 Gb PC2100 DDR RAM 128 Mb GeforceFX 5200 AGP 8X No Problems running but you must download & run the SR3 patches. And yes Win2K is the best OS for Poser 5. :) Shadowdancer

love2pose... i use win2kpro with p5 and it works great. since sr1 up to sr3, i really havent had any problems. alos 1gb of ram is definately a consideration. i use 333 2700 on a p4 2.4. i have my paging-file (control panel>advanced) set to: c: 2000-3000 d: 2000-3000 g: 4000-4095 for a total of 8095. windows wont let me go higher than 4095... and thats on a 200gig drive. good luck!

While it would be nice to plop down a few hundred more on my pc to acheive these high end stats, All I have is what's listed above. I am considering buying another 512mb of RAM, since memory prices are within my budget, so I can at least have the gig of RAM that most have already. I just recently upgraded the mobo and cpu and then bought P5, so I am strapped for cash right now. This is the reason for my posting of this thread to see if anyone happenes to share the same specs as I and what they have their system set to. I have increased my paging file to a gig and placed it on a separate hd (which has been recommended by alot of techies out on the net), so that should help. Needless to say, I have yet to install P5 because of my brother's lack of knowledge for pcs and allowed a bit of malicious content to strike my computer as of late, so alas, there went the c: drive and I had to reformat and reinstall win2000. I have taken the appropriate safeguards now (norton antivirus and norton firewall), so i shouldn't have this problem again (especially since I scared my brother straight when I showed him what was happening). Anywho, thanks so much to those who have posted your comments and I welcome anyone else to post more on this subject! Jim

No need to worry about the extra RAM until/unless you hear Poser transfering data out to the hard drive's paging file. It all depends on scene complexity, e.g. Jim Burton's CPU Perfoance test exercise (there is a thread about it some time back) showed that for that scene 512MB was sufficent. If you have system instability with large page files and very, very large scenes, it may be because Poser is getting close to the hard 2GB memory limit (of any 32-bit app). In which case consider setting your page size such that 2GB can't be reached (e.g. for my 1GB real mem system I have Page size set to 960MB).
