Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 26 1:43 pm)
I don't know how to make the textures import with the object. As far as exporting, it depends on what you want to do. If you're exporting a figure to render, use the Poser defaults. Also, make sure to import the .obj into Carrara as "facet meshes", otherwise you'll get a seam up the side of the figure. If you want to make morph targets, then you should check "include body part names" and "include existing groups", and uncheck "weld body part seams". When using Carrara for morph targets, I also make sure that auto-position and auto-scaling are turned off in the import dialog.
This is speculation and extrapolation - an obj file defines the groups, materials and mapping, but contains no information on texture maps. That is in the CR2 file. If Carrara had been engineered to import CR2 files, we would be set, but this was not done. I believe the mtl file defines the colors for each material, but not the textures - don't know if Carrara uses mtl files. I think you will need to match each material with its texture in the Shader library - it is a bit more complicated than in Poser, but it looks like you can layer textures in Carrara instead of having one per material; way more possibilities and sophistication there. I fear that the proceedure is going to be more painful than was your hope. There should be a way to only have to do this once per character, even if you are importing different poses. I have only cracked Carrara a couple of times - and that to try morphs.
If you were going to do an animation in Carrara and used Poser to set the various poses at the key frames, I would think it unreasonable to expect you to have to assign shaders at every instance. If this is so, then you should be able to treat the still as one frame of an animation. You could keep copies of this file with various names and import the poses for still render and have the shader information all set. Does this sound close to target? dcort: it would not work for Vicki, und I am obsessed mit her.

What do I need to checkmark when exporting objs for carrara if I want the textures to load with the obj in carrara? any idea?
