I have used this atmosphere before, I am recalling that clicking volume under mat room lets it work. Sound like you did that. Then under properties on your chosen light, click atmosphere on. Sound like you did that too. Set the value there very low. I am recalling .003 or .3 or .03 or some such. (sorry I'm at work.) Make sure you have a full background set of objects or planes that are behind where you want your effect. It can't render atmosphere over emptiness. It sounds like you knew that one too, if your objects are turning white. The key was that atmosphere strength dial in the light properties. It just needs to be set very low. Also, other bright lights will wash out this effect. Don't know about the depth of field though. Hope this helps. p.s. I think it has to be spotlight.
Here's a tutorial on the atmosphere effect: http://www.nerd3d.com/Tutorial/Atmosphere/Atmosphere.htm and this is what it says on all-white pictures: "My Render is all wahsed out or solid white. There are a couple of possibilities. The most common is using infinite lights. You should use a spot light. If you need to use infinite lights you will need to set the Volume Density very low. Another possibility is a spot light that is set very wide The more light passing between the camera and your subject the more faded it will look." As for the depth of field effect, I have written a tutorial about that: http://www.keindesign.de/stefan/poser/dof_p5.html Hope that helps, Stefan
thanks looking over both links and yes it is an infinate light. I tried reducing the density down but I guess it was onlly low not Very Low :)

i think that I have atmosphere wrong in my head...I am thinking that I can use it to create distance haze, but it is not working that way at all, the DOF is great though and that is a nice script.

I am thinking that I can use it to create distance haze, but it is not working that way at all, Yes, you can. For that, don't turn up anything on the lights but check the "Depth Cue On" field for the atmosphere node in the Material Room. With a little help of the 3D texture nodes you can add some variation to it.
