Awwww! I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, and he looks so cute too. Pets have a way of becoming family members and it's always a tragedy when we lose them. A big hug and best wishes for a better tomorrow.

So sorry, when my Dog died I think I was more upset at losing him than my Gran. Seems a funny thing to say, but I don't think losing a pet is any easier. Hope you are OK!

Big, tight hug and consoling pat on the back. I know how you feel, we lost two of our favorite cats last year. Marie was seventeen and had cancer so we had to put her to sleep. Rocky was eleven, and a big buiser, but he was no match for a mountain lion.

Nukeboy, the worst is when 'you' have to make the decision as it was nature and age made it for me. We have coyotes near the house, so my hubby put up a 6ft chain link fence with chain link cover so the cats could go 'outside' without my constant head counting to see if everyone was here, I feel better about letting out now. Our dogs usually lets us know when the local wildlife is near the house except for this morning, I woke up to a huge bull elk munching on the birdfeeder on my window sill...this winter should be fun, when all the herds come through this valley, hmmmm, guess I better stock up on alphalfa.

I had a bunny named Thumper. I really loved that little guy. He was the runt of the litter, but he lived to be about 11. I still miss all the pets I've had through the years, but I don't regret having them in my life for a second. Life without a pet just feels too lonely. Hope you feel better soon, Zhann. :^)

Thanks again, I'm feeling better, (although the washer isn't and the dryer is starting to cough), however, Todd (my husband) landed a 'side job' until he can find regular work, so we know the mortagage is paid for next month at least. And I do have other small furry responsiblities that need my attention and love. You guys just don't know how much you mean to me, you are a great bunch of people and much needed support in this kind of thing... your heartfelt posts really did help me get through it, thanks...:)

Hey Zhann, the "kitty run" that your hubby built for your feline companions intrigues me. Ever since my cat Gracie disappeared I've kept my other two cats in the house. I hate it that they can't go outside currently,but I've lost two beloved cats in two years and I'll be damned if I let these two become coyote chow. My question is, how big is the enclosure your hubby built, and do your cats seem satisfied with being fenced in? Thanks!

Danamo, The enclosure is 6ft high x 6ft wide x 12ft long, four 6x6 panels, with 1"x2" field fencing(hardware cloth) zip tied across the top to completely enclose the space. the bottom of the panels are sunk into the ground about 6inches to deter the diggers in the bunch. I designed multilevel areas for them to watch the bird feeders, we used old rabbit cages stacked at different heights and zip tied them together for stability. Now everyone can be on their own 'level', some like it high and others like the ground, and a few switch vantage points depending on who's in the pen. It has a dirt floor, and access through both of my bedroom windows. It does get annoying when they decide to chase one another, it's out one window, zip around the pen a couple of times and then in the other window, across the bed and out again. They seem to like it just fine, I delivered most of them as babies and they have been inside cats throughout their lives, so this was a big thing at first, now only one or two go out periodically during the day, the rest sleep on the bed or annoy me when I'm working on the computer. However, in the morning and evening when the Stellar Jays come to feed everyone is outside flattened to the ground to watch. The added benefit is the Mockingbirds can't get to the cats to bug them. Boy, those are some ornery birds! We have lots of big Magpies too, so the cats stay entertained most of the day.

Oh forgot to mention, there are health benefits to the pen too. I don't worry that one will get into a fight or be attacked by any rabid or diseased wildlife. And the neighbor dogs and kids can't get to them either.

Zhann: The wildlife has Rabies?

Bryster you do know that the UK must be about the only country in the world that doesn't have rabies. Every time I go anywhere abroad I'm always wary of the wildlife just in case they are infected, 'cos I know what it's like to get infected by rabies. Not personally but a friend got nipped by a cat in Greece and came back to find out they had contracted the disease. It took months for them to go through the treatment and be fully cured. Catlin

Well, not all wildlife has rabies but it's out there. Most domestic animals contract it from wildlife they have come in contact with that are infected. I have never heard of a case where I'm living, but the Vets give rabies boosters every year. It's like when people stopped having their kids immunized for smallpox, whooping cough, etc., because no had heard of a case in 50 or 100 years, and then all of a sudden cases were popping up everywhere. The disease is still with us, just the immunization kept it at bay. Same with rabies, you don't hear about it much because most people immunize their pets regularly. In addition there are alot of wildlife diseases that will effect domestic animals and vise versa as well. Racoons are extremely suseptable to both canine and feline distemper (pneumonia) and it can descimate a popluation very quickly, leaving them open to other infections, and parasites. Geez, we don't even want to get into parasites. So, as my grandmother always said, 'better safe than sorry'.....;)

I knew that the UK doesn't have rabies....I remember them screaming about the danger when Thatcher wanted to build the Channel Tunnel. They have it in France and the channel was the only thing stopping it coming over here. Now they're relaxing the pet travel laws and I wouldn't be at all surprised if rabies isn't here soon.
