Hey there .. Just wanted to post a quick collection of some things I am working on for a huge scene for the Challenge Forum. I know a lot of people never head over there. A bunch of Orcs from Tolkien. Still working on some stuff and the poses took all of 5 minutes so they have loose hands etc. Just showing the progress.. Let me know what you think please. Thanks http://GhostofMacbeth.3dworlds.org/OrcMontage.jpg

Hey, this is what I call a coincidence! I like your version of orcs, more treacherous and menacing hehehehe. Good work on the textures esp the eyes. Unfortunately I'm one of those who hardly ever go to the Challenge Forum but now I'm curious.

Thanks Jon .. Definately a different version but thanks. And the Challenge Forum has been kind of quiet lately but it is pretty cool.

Groovy Textures Ghost... you might consider shifting the highlight towards orange for the tunics... and maybe some transparencies for "Holy Shirts"? ) Cheers mate... good work as always ) Wizzard

They will be rendered in Bryce for the final so that is why I didn't switch the highlights over but thanks. And have transparancies for the holy shirts but wanted to specify for which people. Right now they are only frayed at the edges and stuff but they will have previous wound marks for the troops later. And thanks

I always thought Orcs had bigger ears. And were darker - these guys look really pale. :) Northern tribe? For a totally surreal (and gross) reading experience, try "Orc Marines" by Mary Gentle. very very strange. VERY VERY strange. :)

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Wed, 02 August 2000 at 7:16 AM

Well some of them do have big ears but I have been using them mostly for the Oruk ...A little bigger but nothing too huge. I will be having some darker ones but basically they are grey and grey black. Some tribes darker and lighter. Was also going a little light on them for demo renders to see goofs .. Hadn't heard of it butI will look for it

Gentle has another novel out? "Grunts" was great! Or is that the "Orc Marines" book you're talking about? The descriptions inside the book sound more like TOlkein, but the cover art, IIRC, looked more Warhammer40K...

Lyrra ( ) posted Wed, 02 August 2000 at 2:19 PM

Oops - my bad. Forgot the publisher changed the name when it hit print. I read a draft version. Yes - that is Grunts. :) Now that I look again, the chainmail doesn't look quite right. On the closeup the rings are a little too big, and the black area shiould be dark grey, as there are more rings crossing there. The most common weave for chainmail is for every ring to have four rings connecting it. So some are horizontal, and are connected by 4 vertical to the rings around it. The smaller the rings, the less holes, the better protection. A bump map would work wonders.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Wed, 02 August 2000 at 2:43 PM

I have a bump map done .. This is just run without it so I can save some space in my poser file an it doesn't translate into Bryce. I believe the ring set up is like you describe. And it does look much better with the bump.

Truly groovy Ghost.. and thank you for the thanks.. ) I presume you've referanced the Sylmarillion? There's a few decent descriptions of the orcs and their language... Over all... the work is relatively faultless... ) I'd like to see a semi-final render with the bump & trans maps.... zap-mail it to me if you don't wish to post it... ) Thanks mate, Wizzard

Yeah .. Have referenced them as well. Read them many times. Even that one. Will be rendering a bunch more but will post it soon. And thanks
