Subject: Who is the owner of your computer?

enax ( ) posted Tue, 14 October 2003 at 10:20 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 11:44 PM

Bug fixes -VuePro- I bought and I paid for software that must work perfect. If it needs updates, and it really needs them; why don't let the customers choose the way to update its software? I don't like all my software connecting to internet. I understand this for an antivirus, but even in this case, I can choose if I want automatic updates or download through web.
The "remove programs" list of my computer is full of "Windows XP HotFix". Is e-on Software as pretentious as Microsoft or is this kind of behaviors the indication of ineptness?
I understand that the software is very complex and must be necessary one or two updates. Even the exemplary Adobe has updates; Bryce 5 has "one" update too, but I can download them.

It is not about arrogance or ineptness.... it is just about making things easier and automate updates. Now ... I understand your pain for different reason. I have no problem with automated download or update function, as long as there is a way to retrieve the downloaded package and save it offline. The problem with windows updates (or Norton) for example is that, if you have to re-load everything again each time you re-install things.

Hi Agiel, I understand that automatic updates make things easy, but I want to have the possibility to choose.
Now I'm waiting for a new motherboard a new disk for my computer, I'll install Windows again, again downloads of windows, it can be 100 Mb only in "HotFix" but I have the updates of my software (except windows of course) and drivers in a CD, this is easy for me.

After experiencing some difficulties updating to XP Pro from 2000 Pro, I now have all software, drivers, and updates that don't require their CD on my HD. I can reinstall and be up to speed in about 7 or 8 hours which isn't bad considering the 50 (!) major packages installed on my system (some spanning several CDs each). Hopefully, E-On will make the updates available for archival download as well as automatic download/install.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

They intend to, but not until they iron out a few more issues. What the update function in Vue Pro does is let you get any -incremental- updates that have cleared the QC hurdle. What will be released on the e-on site will be a comprehensive patch including all the incrementals to release date.

Yes, DaleB. Hey folks, this is just standard practice for all the professional packages. Most of the professional 3d people working for production companies started demanding this facility to be built into the software several years ago. E-On would have to have this kind of function if they are marketing Vue Pro to the professionals. Normally, most people set the facility to have its default be "off" and they just turn it on before they start a new project - just to see if there's something new they will need. Its the industry standard for keeping software up to date.

Oh, another thing. Usually, after the software has been out for awhile, its not bug fixes that are being transmitted. It's improvements or added features of various kinds. Enhancements to the rendering engine, and so forth. It saves you from having to remember to check out their site to learn if a new feature has been added. A really good program will be in service for about two-three years before a completely new version is created. This is just a service the company provides you to keep your software up to date with minimal effort on your part.

Hey Forester, you are right, this is correct, I don't criticize this, I only wanna choose. This is publicity for e-on as well, if the people go to e-on's website for updates they can see new products, as my case, when I went to see if the update 4.2 was realised I bought VuePro. Anyway they have more things to imitate from Pro-Software. Thanks

Seems like they heard you enax, cause now you can manually download Vue4pro.4.5 update build 266001 (full update)on e-on provided you registered to enter the restricted area of course. I just downloaded it : 17.2M for win, 18,4M for Mac.

Thanks Polax; I'm downloading it. As I said, I'm waiting for a new disk and this way is more useful. Also I can read the improvements and bug fixes. Of course I understand the "restricted area". I liked the possibility to suggest in the registration form. I think this is better for e-on and for us.

This could be a major problem for those who do not have internet access on the machine where they've installed VuePro.
