Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 03 12:46 am)
If I'm not mistaken what most of the updaters do is search for your install directory by searching for Poser.exe. It could be the installer is simply searching your entire drive for the app. Can you click on a cancel button? Sometimes they will cancel the search and allow you to enter the directory manually. Also, why are your using ME if I may ask? Do you have the option of using 2k or xp? You will do WAY better with those OS than with ME. XP will run poser better than 2k or ME.
I'd think that something with the ME-installation went wrong. You want to look for a small program, "filemon", that tells you which files the OS or your app wants to access. Maybe some .dll is corrupted or missing - with the file monitor you'll know why. You may want to invest into another OS (Win2K or XP)- ME is not particularly the best platform for Poser...
Hit ctrl-esc-del and bring up the task manager. I've had this happen on occasion and found that the program is actually loaded in the task list but not running properly. In any event, I'd first try killing any extraneous processes, virus checker anything run ning in the background and see if by chance the installer will run. You m ight also try booting into safe mode and seeing if it will run then which would probably narrow it down to some driver you have loaded. Next in terms of time consumption, re-download the file and try it again. If that doesn't work, time to reinstall the OS.

You obviously had some computer problems that you attem[ted to fix by reinstalling Windows ME. The fact that your reinstall was not successful is a good indication you still have some big problems with your computer. You didn't give us enough information on this issue. Do you have an antivirus program? Can you scan for viruses? Do you have a utility to check your computer? Have you tried to run System Restore? What have you done to fix this problem? Is your computer still under warranty? Can you call the manufacturer?
The manufacturer (HP) basically said fuck off, since I'm not using their special version of ME, and had to bum mine off somebody. System restore won't go back far enough, and no I have no virus scanner, and I doubt it could be a virus since the laptop hasn't been hooked to the internet for the past year.

I really sympathize with your problem, but you may have actually created your own problem. Unfortunately, those "OEM" computers have their own "OEM" version of the operating systems, and you must use what comes with the computer. That's why I make my own computers from scratch, and buy the "plain vanilla" operating systems from Microsoft. If I dump my own computer and build a new one, I always have the operating system I already bought.
I think you should contact CL's tech support. Since the Poser installers are the only applications that you're having problems with, they're the most likely to have seen this before and have a fix. I assume you're trying to run the install from the Original Poser CD and that you've tried redownloading the updater. I seem to recall that CL has their own install rather than the standard Windows installer or one of the third party packages - no telling what it's trying to do.

This started when I had to reinstall my operrating system (Win ME), and it wasn't to the default Windows folder. Basically what the problem is is that I click a poser installation program, or the 4.03 updater, and it does absolutely nothing. This is a major problem due to the fact that I had to reinstall Poser last night, and I can't get it to take the large number of morphs with the Victoria 2.0 figure. Anyone have any clue how to get the updater to work? I managed to get the udpater working once a month or two ago, but I don't remember how.
