Subject: Whats the deal?

aggelos ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 6:46 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 2:33 PM

I have noticed at daz that there are no none, nada, new things coming out for m2 and the original mike. Whats up with this? Have they discontinued em? What do I now have to buy m3, and poser 5. Its beginning to look to me as if DAZ is taking pages from Microsofts "how to bully customers into buying new products book". That being said, anyone here at rosity still making new things for m2 and v2?

Farside ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 7:09 AM

Daz is just doing to Mike what they did to Vicky. Same old, same old. They want you to dump the old & buy the new.

Insom_Nia ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 7:36 AM

But that wouldn't be very clever, wouldn't it? I mean drying out the V2 and M2 market in favour of M3 or V3 means less money. Better would be to cater to several markets and tastes...

PabloS ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 8:22 AM

with the release of M3, there's more demand for M3 accessories ... at least for the foreseeable future. Economics (supply and demand) plays a big part in any successful enterprise. Daz must observe the same rules to obtain sufficient profits to stay in business ... and finish Daz Studio. :-)

Farside ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 8:26 AM

I could be wrong but I don't recall Daz releasing a single non-brokered item for Vicky 1-2 since Vicky 3 was released. They just cut off all support for her. I doubt they'll change their strategy for Mike 3 although the major difference with him is Mike 1-2 never got all the clothing Vicky 1-2 did so there is potentially still a healthy market for Mike 3 clothing being converted. What I'd love to see is someone good at modeling open a store devoted to taking V3 and M3 clothing done by Daz or here at Renderosity, convert the clothing to V2 and M2 and sell the converted items to people using Objaction Mover or RTEncoder. Bet a good amount of $$$ could be made with half the effort. Just convert other peoples creations and it's perfectly legal.

PabloS ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 8:28 AM

... and it doesn't mean less money, it means more. If there's little demand for V/M2, it makes sense to focus on version 3, where demand is greater. end of economics lesson. :-)

Oh, geez, here come the conspiracy theorists again. Do you find stuff for Bryce 2? Vue d'Esprit 1? Seen any good Poser 2 content recently? Heck, except for PhilC, anything for Poser 3? The world keeps moving. You can move with it, or you can stay in the past. Most companies find that moving with it is the only way to survive. It's not a conspiracy, it's not a way to bully you into buying new products, it's just the way the world works. That out of the way, do you have a specific item you'd like to see converted? If I have it, I have time, and the Tailor is kind to it, I'll do it for free.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 8:38 AM

How would you be forced to upgrade? The earlier V/M still work, the old products are still available and new products are being released by brokers. Of course DAZ are pushing their new baby, it's unsurprising and no big deal (and no conspiracy).

gryffnn ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 8:55 AM

For clothes, have you looked at poserworld.com? I just updated my Michael 1 product! (MikePlusVersion2 for M1 or M2, in my store here) with additional character faces and lots of new features. HTH - Elisa/gryffnn

Farside ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 9:23 AM

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy, I'm just stating the truth. Daz wants people to buy clothing, textures etc... for Vicky 3, not to keep using the old items you've already paid Daz for once before. That's why they don't put any morphs in the V3-V2 body, because then you'd just buy the Vicky 3 character and not the new versions of the old clothing. In 18 months when Vicky 4 comes out, Vicky 3's clothing won't fit her. It's just be a continuous cycle. Not saying it's right or wrong, it's just the way it is. Truth is I like Vicky 3 and would use her if I could. Computers just aren't powerful enough yet to use her for more than just portraits or with just a couple of characters in a picture. With any luck Daz Studio will allow people to put 8-10 Vicky 3's in a scene and my problems will be solved. If not, I'm stuck with Vicky 2 and will keep whining, bitching and moaning every time I see an item of clothing I want to give someone money for but can't because it's only for Vicky 3.

It's smart business, although bad for our pocketbook. As long as the market will support it, it will be worthwhile for DAZ to do this. Personally, I will only use one version 3 figure (V3 or M3) in any scene, and use version 2 figures or others for any subordinate characters. It's just too much for my computer's memory management. Even with 768 MB RAM on a 1.3GHz processor, V3s INJ morphs work only sporadically, so that weighs on whether I'll buy M3s. Consequently, I get very little for version 3 figures. Were more people to take this approach and make V2 and M2 products more economically viable (or products with fit morphs for both versions), we might see more emphasis. In the meantime, there's some great stuff for version 2s in the marketplaces at R'osity, RuntimeDNA, PoserPros and others. Besides, do you really want too much to spend your money on? Take care; Chas

As far as the PClub at any rate this is simple economics, as someone above pointed out .. given the price of products in the PClub we have little room for error , the products have to have wide appeal, for instance I work for a week minimum on each texture pkg (same with Moyra and Lisa) we have to put that time towards projects we feel will have the most appeal to the most folks , otherwise we would not be able to do this for long (I like to eat g). That said however you will still see some V2 products in the form of meshes in the Club coming up , and I would never say never to M2 or anything else .... ;-).

I would think, like a computer that has become a bit obsolete, the same goes for M1. Most people like the higher "abilities" of M2 and M3. I don't think DAZ is pushing anything. I just think that most people want a "higher" model and accessories to go with it. Having said that, I would still think there is a market for M2 stuff. People who don't have the money to get M3 (and the assorted wardrobe), a powerful enough PC, etc. As said above, Poserworld ($50 yearly subscription) seems to be supporting multiple models with their clothing releases. Check it out. And, browse some other sites. And remember, most items on DAZ are brokered. Not sure of the policy, but I suspect the brokers get to choose what they want to make and sell to a large degree.

NightFlyer ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 12:58 PM

actually if you know where to look there's still tons of stuff out there for P3 ;0)

Netherworks ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 1:20 PM

Well, I don't plan to do any M2 stuff, but I have and will in the future support Stephanie, Victoria and V3 with my products. In fact, I just released one today. My store is now based at PoserPros.

Gareee ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 1:58 PM

Just my .02... look how much stuff is already out for V2 and M2.... look what's out for M3 and M3. When you create a product, you need to get enough stuff out to make people want to buy it. There just plain isn't really enough stuff out for M3 yet to really support the character. You'll see them really push v3 and m3 new stuff for quite some time Id think, until there a great diversity of things out. My biggest beef? You buy say, M3.. but wait! he's not complete! You need to buy the body morh package... But WAIT! HE'S STILL not complete! you need to buy the texture package... BUT WAIT! HE'S STILL not friggin coomplete! you need to buy the head morph package! IMHO just release the friggin figure with everything he really needs. when you total everything up, these new characters are just plain REALLY expensive. Even the friggin millinium cat had 2 packages so you could use him as many different cats. And don't EVEN get me started about the number of conversion packages for the millenium cube...

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

Aggelos, Most everything we make is made so it fits V1, V2, V3, and Stephanie.......and we plan to continue this on most products for the future as long as we can....We try to add 1-3 products per month when possible, with lots of morphs etc to fit various body styles...We try to make them as easy to use as possible but yet give as much variety and flexibility as we can...Most even come with a small user guide to help those new to poser and or morphs etc...

maclean ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 3:32 PM

'And remember, most items on DAZ are brokered. Not sure of the policy, but I suspect the brokers get to choose what they want to make and sell to a large degree.' Chuck, the system is simple. A broker can make anything he/she wants to, and submit it. If DAZ like it and it does what it's supposed to do, they'll sell it. The only input from DAZ that I've ever seen is when a new figure is coming out, (like vicki or mike), they give the brokers advance notice and ask anyone who's interested in making items for that figure to mail them for technical specs, etc. Other than that, it's pretty much up to the individual. So, if there's a lack of brokered items for the older figures, that's because the brokers aren't making them. mac

Connatic ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 6:18 PM

V3 is not the resource-hog so many people make it out to be. If used properly, a V3 character is much smaller than a V2 character. You must manage the morphs. I have no problem having 2 V3 figures and an M2 plus a full bevy of props together in the same scene. I have 512mb ram.

Ratteler ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 10:57 PM

I know I wouldn't buy anything new for V2 or M2. In fact, I'm working on just the opposite. Re-cutting V2 and maybe M2 to conform to V3 and M3 so they can use V3 and M3 clothes. I might just op to turn V2 into a Med Res M3, since the Unimesh is clearly based on Vicky. As for DAZ, I think it's just smart to release stuff for whats current. I certainly wouldn't mind V2 and M2 Cr2's for any V3 and M3 stuff I bought if DAZ chose to make them available.

Farside ( ) posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 11:21 PM

Ratteler - I e-mailed Daz about that very idea months ago & brought it up in Renderosity forums. I don't care how it's done, I just want to be able to keep buying the clothing and if its a recut V2 that's fine with me. Best of luck with the project.

Caly ( ) posted Sun, 26 October 2003 at 10:52 AM

Since V3 can do everything V2 can do and much more, I pretty much stopped using V2. It is possible to have her at a decent file size. V3 was working just fine on my 400mhz machine. :D
