THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Serious stuff... are YOU addicted to the internet?

draculaz ( ) posted Thu, 23 October 2003 at 8:59 AM · edited Wed, 12 February 2025 at 2:10 PM

You know, I gotta admit this... the past three weeks without readily-available internet have taken a toll on me. Honestly, being able to have access to the net 24/7, and having a computer 10 feet away from me at most times were paramount. So much so that after I got robbed I went through a period much like what people go through with drungs, alcohol, etc. Not kidding. I'm not saying I didn't have a life, but the ability to sit down, make something in Bryce, Wings, etc., the absolute freedom of getting news from anywhere I wanted, watching movies on a whim, listening to whatever music I liked just by popping the dvd or cd in (good save, no?)... it was liberating. NOT having all these things has been a kick in the groin. So much so that when I furtively downloaded Wings3D on a comp here and tried to model something I realized that I was completely out of it. Interesting no? On the one hand you have the natural addiction to information and entertainment, to the world of 3D, and on the other you have the realization that too much time away from these things also curtails your ability to properly work with them once you do resume things. Don't know how much of it makes sense or not. But I do know that my 'talent' isn't as much a native thing as a learned process, and by staying away from bryce for this while, together with my semi-depression at the events of the last three weeks or so... it goes away. I know how you feel. I have had to make major adustments in my schedule due to NOT HAVING A LIFE outside of 3D....that can't be good. Too much of one thing they say....so I now am on a schedule and actually feel better about it. But you are quite correct regarding the rest. Sharen

I thought my hard drive had been erased this past week and was almost in tears. It is my main means of communication with a family spread all over this country! I did not realize how dependent I had become on my computer until then. My son in law was able to come over and fix it and nothing was lost. Don't know what happened, but I am making sure to back up everything I just can't deal with losing now for the next couple of days. Yes I am addicted to the internet.:)

Erlik ( ) posted Thu, 23 October 2003 at 11:02 AM

Heh. :-) Been there, done that, got the shakes. :-) The ability to look up anything I want is a serious help to anything and anything. Not to mention the fact that I feel cut off if I can't check my mail. My modem died this summer when I was awa

Oh I'm hooked. I admit it. My biggest fear is getting E-thrombosis I'm at the computer so much. That's why when possible (anytime but winter) my wife and I go to my parent's cottage up north. No computer. Just a TV, and no cable or satellite. ;c) Wish I had a working bike though so I could ride again.

chohole ( ) posted Thu, 23 October 2003 at 1:38 PM

Definately hooked. Having been a carer for my mother in law 24/7, until the old lady passed on a couple of months ago, the internet was quite often my only way of feeling that I was still in the real world.

It's crazy when I go on vacation. This summer I had 10 days without my computer, then 4 days to make the most of it, then another 7 days without it. It was just nuts!

Zhann ( ) posted Thu, 23 October 2003 at 4:08 PM

I know when we moved I packed the computers up the night before, and even before the pots and pans were unpacked, the computers were up and running, linked to the net. However, I do make time on weekends and for my favorite TV shows, SciFi channel, Enterprise and Stargate...I get envolved with the computer the same as he does with car racing so we're matched for that.. Although, lately we IM each other or send e-mails, when we need to talk, geesh, I just realized I should go give him a hug, IN PERSON.....;)

hahaahahahah Zhann I knew a married couple that were online all the time....she'd wanna talk to him and IM him and say something, and he'd say brb and never get back with her! LMAO not long after that they had an intercom system installed so he couldn't brb on her anymore..LMAO lol and ohhh yeaaaaaaaaa who isn't hooked?? grins

catlin_mc ( ) posted Thu, 23 October 2003 at 7:32 PM

My partner and I sit back to back, hardly ever talk to each other and if we find anything interesting on the web to point out to each other we send emails. We do talk sometimes like first thing in the morning when I say "darling make me a coffee" and on going to bed we do say goodnight. The only other valid time for talking is when we go shopping and argue about what kind of food we're going to eat, or when one of us does a really neat 3D scene and wants instant praise from the other. All in all, it's a good life and yes I'm definately addicted to........... the internet, cigarettes, coffee, and not forgetting dear old Bryce. 8) Catlin

  1. We admitted we were powerless over internet-- that our lives had become unmanageable. 2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity... and so on -I still do go to work everyday.Without a laptop. -I do have a wife... I think, somewhere in this house.lol

Rayraz ( ) posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 9:10 AM

I'm sooooo addicted to the internet and computers! I spend at least 6 hours online every day on average. I have more friends on the net then in my direct surroundings. And I even talk english more often then dutch even though english isn't a primary language in my country. I just talk more on the net then with people around me. After having a shower and breakfast my day starts with checking my e-mails and forums at somewhere between 6:15 and 10:00 am. Then I go to school 3 days a week, sometimes more. And then when I'm home again I'm back behind my comp chatting e-mailing and surfing forums. I only leave comp to play on my viola or to leave my room to eat or watch TV. Every day ends when I'm done chatting with a nice girl from Puerto Rico at about 23:00pm to 1:15am. I met her on a forum and now she's like one of my best friends. How's that for having an e-life instead of having a-life :)

heck..I remember downloading, er..artwork, yeah, that's the ticket..;) on a 14.4k modem from BBS's (pre-internet). Originally started with a 1200-baud (mid-80's..;), so I understand. Have a high-speed connection at work and home, so maybe an hour or two a day at each location..is that addiction? (To be honest, slightly-OT, I've noticed that the number of threads has declined a bit since '01, when I first got here..;)

LOL I agree with Rayraz...LOL I hav emore frinds online then in real.... lol there's so many mor epoepl eonline in my life then in real, it's just easier...LOL I remember my early days in email..I was ooo thrilled that it was sooo fast compared to "snail mail" (no offence to any postmen) which is what we called paper mail in college... Now with the instant messangers so readily available everywhere, even web based versions with no downloading neccessary, even email seems slowwwwwwwwwww...LOL How do you know You live in the 21st Century? 1. You are talking to someone in real and shout out LOL LOL ! 2. You hear "I sent you a letter" and you run to your pc, not your mailbox. 3. You stand in front of the microwave cursing it to hurry uppppp!!! 4. Trips to get film developed are becoming rare.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 10:17 AM

I think the efriends is one of the most enticing parts of the internet 'cos there are so many amazing, interesting people out there that you otherwise wouldn't meet, and in comparrison to the idiots that I'm actually surrounded with in real life it is a pleasure to talk to folks with inteligent, enquiring minds, and similar interests (CG again). And I'm with Rayraz, as soon as I get up I switch on the PC and then go make a coffee, by the time the coffee is made the PC is up and running and I'm online checking mail and surfing. I really do spend all day in front of my monitor, whether it's for work or play. Although I do take a break sometimes and watch a DVD on the PC which is dedicated to tv etc. lol 8D Catlin
