Hi For some reason I have trouble loading .vue files that I saved. I create the scene, save as a .vue file in scenes> personal. It saves, but when I try to open them again, I get the attached error message. The file seems to have saved ok, when I click on it an image appears on the open window. I know it is me, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone please help?

Saving in Vue is crucial - its a bit finicky at times (in my experience) so you may have to go to the .bak file if you have one. Make certain all maintenance on the computer has been done (defrag, check disk etc.)recently and save often using different names IE RED_two.vue, RED_three.vue. Never save 1.vue, 2.vue etc. because for some reason vue doesn't get it at times (not sure why - saw it in a thread somewhere). Also check search for recovery and saving tips from other users.

Unfortunately, this has happened to me in the past as well, Phily and Robot17 is right as far as saving files using different names (not just vue.1, vue2, etc.)! ALSO, as I was told by MightyPete (hmmmm, wonder where he's been?!?), you NEVER want to save over an old file!!! This is a recipe for sure disaster as I've found out the hard wasy ;-)! IF you do have .bak files then this means that were saving over the old ones, which is something you definitely want to get away from doing!! I know this won't help you in your current situation, but it will save you this headache in the future!! ==steve

Yeah - where is MP?

Phily, some Vue scenes, when they become huge, needs lots of time to be saved. If the saving is interrupted, Vue will not be able to open it again. As already said above, hopefully you have a *.bak file of it. Even if it is not the latest one, you may be able then to recuperate your scene. Guitta

*.bak file? I do save often, but I'm guilty of saving *-1, *-2, etc, that may be part of my problem. Can I rename my files?

gebe ( ) posted Tue, 28 October 2003 at 4:39 AM

I always use *.01vue, .02vue... without any problem. Have a look if you have the same files (-1, *-2) with a *.bak extension insteed of a *.vue extension. Rename the last *.bak file into a *.vue file. And yes, you always can rename any file. Guitta

Welcome back, and thank you.

Brewvet ( ) posted Tue, 28 October 2003 at 8:57 AM

In the options panel you can check "Make backup copies (.bak) when saving scenes." This will automatically back the files up (and you can REALLY eat HD space!) MN

Happy File-1.vue------------------WRONG? Happy File-2.vue------------------WRONG? Happy File.01vue------------------RIGHT? Happy File.02vue------------------RIGHT? Happy file_one.vue----------------RIGHT? Happy file_two.vue----------------RIGHT? "you NEVER want to save over an old file!!! This is a recipe for sure disaster as I've found out the hard wasy ;-)! IF you do have .bak files then this means that were saving over the old ones, which is something you definitely want to get away from doing!!" I'm a little confused Spider1313, you're way over my head. :O( Brewvet, will your suggestion cause the problems Spider1313 is talking about?

Brewvet ( ) posted Tue, 28 October 2003 at 5:04 PM

Quite honestly, I don't know. I've never had the problem of a file that will not open except once. I then opened the backup file and it worked. I believe that when you save a file by hitting the 'save' button it will update the backup file as well. I could be wrong because I've never dealt with a problem like this. Perhaps someone from e-on can elucidate the answer for us. I do think that the file extension should always be .vue or .bak and not .01vue or .02bak Sorry I don't know more about the file system. Happy File-1.vue------------------RIGHT Happy File-2.vue------------------RIGHT Happy File.01vue------------------WROOOONG!!! Happy File.02vue------------------WRONG!! Happy file_one.vue----------------RIGHT Happy file_two.vue----------------RIGHT Scene files always have extension *.vue, as Brewvet said. And another file is *.bak, if you have it enabled. Vue saves automatically with the vue and bak extension. You don't need to write it. From every file you will have a bak. like Happy File-1.bak Rename this file to Happy File-1.vue and you will be able to open it again. But... Possibly this is not the latest file you have saved. Important is, that with bak files you don't loose your complete work. You only loose (about) the latest 2 savings. Hope this helps. Guitta

You are always a big help, many thanks Guitta. Does saving over a file Happy File.vue over Happy File.vue cause any problems? Can you "Flip" an object, not turn, "Flip"?

gebe ( ) posted Wed, 29 October 2003 at 12:29 PM

You can flip, yes. try this icon (flip vertically or horizontally) No problem in overwriting any file, of course:-) Guitta

Hmmmm, didn't realize this one was still going on here...hmmmm...where'd all my notifications go to?!?... but since it is, let me just say that ever since I adopted MightyPete's credo of never saving over old files I have yet to have another problem with opening any files in VUE and the folks around will tell ya that they had to listen to me whimpering and whining here in the past with this exact same situation '-)!! BUT(fingers crossed here) I'm a happy VUE-saver now!!! Just my additional belated .02!! ==steve
