Subject: has anyone seen this character?

Hi, I am working on a film that involves real actors and poser characters. The attached file is of Yarden - the leading actor in the film. What I wish to do is build Yarden's character using poser. He can even be a bit humoristic. Any ideas how can I do this? I was thinking of using Michael 3 but am not sure this will work. Also, I haven't been able to find this kind of open buttoned casual flanel shirt he is wearing. Maybe someone knows where to find such a shirt, or how to make one that resembles it? Would appreciate any help, Thanks, Eran - StoryO's Productions. storyos@yahoo.com

For a very limited time, you can get a flannel shirt like that from PhilC... it even has the sleeves-rolled-up morph. He does "almost freestuff" offerings for about a week before they slip to regular price... and this has been out a few days. If I was even thinking about using the Mike3 character, I'd pounce on this set ($1.99!) as cheap insurance. I don't like the views or textures he is showing (I'm soooooooooo tired of that contrapostal posture), but I've used other clothing of his and the mesh and mapping are top-notch and easy to work with. Really baggy wrinkled jeans will be harder. There are various nerdish glasses out there, and that horrid hair has been modeled at least a half-dozen times. Why anybody wants to buy and use hair that looks like an uncombed compost heap is beyond me, but you will find lots of gallery images showing ruffled hair. (Of course, I still haven't figured out why the guys are wearing their trousers so low as to expose their underwear. Tacky!) Carolly

Thanks Carolly, The flanel shirt is the first one I met that even resembles the actor's shirt. Do you know if it is possible to change such a shirt's texture to get bigger and brown green stripes like the actor's shirt? Eran.

oooops... cross-posted. (OK, so dyslexics type slowly at best) Phil, whatever inspired you to put those shades of green together? (roll eyes) peagreen and olive? Yes, those are supposed to be casual clothes, not work clothes, but if that represents this season's palette as determined by the experts in NY, I'm going back under my rock until Spring! Carolly

Storyos, Sure. The actor appears to be wearing a plaid (there seems to be a faint vertical stripe as well as the strong horizontal stripe). One would need a picture of the shirt (like a nice flat middle of the back shot!) in white light or daylight (so that the real colors would be obvious). Clothing comes with a "template". This is a flat UVmapped image of the mesh. You are probably familiar with the "mercator projections" of the earth found in every classroom - where the globe is flattened and the grid is plain? UVmaps are like that, but some are better than others. You take that template into PhotoShop or similar program. Add another layer for YOUR pattern, and work with the template as a guide for placing, scaling, and aligning the pattern so that the sleeves join neatly and the size is right. If it is 8 repeats from shoulder to hem on the actor, you want 8 repeats on the map, too! If something needs to be centered (like a label showing at nape of neck), you want it to be aligned at the right place on your map. After you are happy with the look and have covered everything including the buttons, you flatten your layers so that only the colored one shows, and save it in a format readable by your version of Poser. (I don't think the early versions could read .pngs, but .jpgs at 100% are safe.) Load the model, slap the shirt on him, apply the new pattern... and see how it looks. This is where you get to play with colored lighting (trying to match your studio lights in colors), and see if it has the same ambiance. Carolly

I made the texture map very flat so all you'll need to do is flood fill a plaid tiled image over it.

And green wassup with green? :))

Phil, I like green. I like all sorts of green. My garden is a mixture of greens. Tasteful greens (and some tasty ones, too.) Are you by any chance one of those people who actually likes split pea soup? :worried look: Carolly PS, I wouldn't floodfill a plaid. Paisley, maybe, but not plaid. I've matched too many of them while sewing.

Great. How do you "apply the new pattern"? Eran.

PhilC ( ) posted Mon, 03 November 2003 at 9:52 AM

In Poser 4 just use the menu command Render/Materials then in the window that appears load the texture. There are a few other options available, but that is the jist of it. Poser 5 is similar but has some more bells and whistles.

Thanks philc, I will buy the shirt a.s.a.p. Eran.

I'd recommend the Mihai hair from DAZ (currently a 99 Platinum Club special).

I was also thinking about the mihai hair. Do you know if there is something similar enough that has morphing capabilities? Also, if someone knows about where can I find the glasses it would help. The most important part would still probably be how to build this character using michael 3. Any suggestions?

He shouldn't be too hard to make with M3. The nose is almost there as is. Load one of the pictures as a background picture in Poser and start twisting the dials till it fits. That's the usual way to do it I think.
