Subject: Speed issues with Poser 5

I have noticed a marked slow down in Poser 5 and was wondering if you know if the amount (quantity) of models, poses, lighting etc impact the performance ? I have the latest service pack loaded but the processor can be working at 100% for up to an hour and locking the machine while it loads a new texture or model. Spec: P4 2.3 with 1GB ram and Gforce 4 graphics card and plenty of free hard disc space. Some lighting can bring the computer to its knees. Is it me, or do other users suffer from ultra long computing times ? Thank you for reading. Tony

Poser 5 IS noteably slower than P4/PPP. If Poser searches for hours for a texture, it may be a VERY good idea to run a CorrectReference on your Runtime(s) Unfortunately, Poser does not use any graphics acceleration, but apart from that you should have good specs for running Poser 5. I have only 256Mb ram and I can run it, slower than PPP, but not unusable. Some light sets apparently crash Poser 5. It is a good idea to delete all lights in a scene before adding new ones from a set. There's a python script in Free Stuff that will delete the lights for you :o)

Also don't work across a mapped/networked drive. I used to map my poser stuff to a P: drive so no matter what machine I worked on, all the files would work. That slows poser way down. Poser uses no hardware accel so it has to compute lighting for preview and rendered modes using your processor. That's why I cringe when I see light packs with like 50 to 100 lights in them. For flat shading each triangle does a dot product with the light vector. For smooth shading, each vertex does a dot product. This gets worse as you add lighing nodes etc. A dot product is 3 float multiplies and two adds. For a 1000 vertex model that 3000 multiplies and 2000 adds for just one light for smooth shading. And that's just one light. Ack! Try 50 lights. And don't even start with ray tracing and shadows.

Hey Tony... I love your name, that book was one of my favourites as a child :) Anyway, I've noticed a considerable increase in speed of my P5 since doing the following: - Separate out runtimes, leaving only the Curious Labs supplied content in the main runtime, along with the !DAZ injection folders. - Apply SR3 - Run Correct Reference over the entire library and keep it up to date with all new stuff that I download. Takes ages but well worth it.
