Subject: PLEASE HELP ME SOMEBODY!!!

MINTY1974 ( ) posted Wed, 12 November 2003 at 12:45 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 12:16 PM

Hi all. I have just installed Poser 3 (yeah I know it's old! I can hear you groan as you read this) and I am a complete novice. Could somebody please tell me how I apply clothes to the models? And where do i actually download clothes to from the internet?

I told you I was a novice. Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Minty

You might want to post on the Poser Forum with a subject such as: Poser 3 - need help with clothes That will give you a more targeted response. You might also search for Poser 3 on the Poser Forum... you are not the only one using it, I assure you.

I have poser 4 so I don't know if the setup is the same. TO ADD A FIGURE: Select your figure from one of the libraries on the side panel. Then click the single check mark at the bottom of the panel. To add clothing, select a folder with clothing in it. This is all performed on that side panel. Select the desired item and click on the double check mark at the bottom. This is very important because if you double click on the icon or select the single check, then it will ask you if you want to replace the figure you are wanting to clothe. Then under figure on the menu at the top of the explorer window, pick the item listed as conform to. Use the arrow on the pop-up to select your original figure. Then click ok. DOWNLOADING CLOTHES: There are a lot of freebies out there. Trying looking here first, specifically near the end of the free item section. Make sure you are downloading clothing specific to the P3 figures. Then use winzip and windows explorer to copy the files in the zip folder to the appropriate folders under your Runtime folder where you have installed P3. Hope this helps a little...

Pose 3 DO NOT CONFORM that was one of the biggest improvements from 3 to 4 you have to parent the clothing onto the character (shirt will be parented to the abdomin, pants to the hips and so on) and you also have to apply the pose to the character as well as the clothes to keep them looking proper

You might as well PAY attention, because you can't afford FREE speech

steveshanks ( ) posted Wed, 12 November 2003 at 3:10 PM

Stallion has it :o)...in a lot of ways this works better than conforming, just takes a bit longer...a tip for the posing, once you have your figure posed, hit a pose dot, then select the clothing and hit the dot again.....to get rid of a dot Alt-click.....BTW if an item says its for the poser 4 female dload it, you'll get a wrong version error but odds are it'll work...Steve

Thanks for all the advice so far guys. HOWEVER!! This is the bit where I sound like a complete novice, can somebody talk me through the download procedure for poser 3 clothes? No matter where I seem to place the downloaded items they do not seem to appear in the toolbar on the right of the screen. Thanks for your patience guys! Minty

still in trouble folks!! thanks for the link that will be a great help in the future. What I really need right now is somebody to tell me what I am doing wrong when downloading poses/clothes into poser 3. When I download they do not appear when i go to use them!! AM I BEING STUPID??? Cheers Minty

You are installing the items once you download, right? I don't have P3, so I don't know how exactly it works, but for P4, once you download you need to unzip/extract the items into the proper libraries. CR2 goes to Figures, PZ2 to Pose, PP2 goes to Props, FC2 to Face, HD2 to Hands, HR2 to Hair, CM2 to Camera, LT2 to Light, OBJ to Geometries and textures(jpg, ect.) to Textures or wherever you want.

This may help. Go to my freestuff and click on the Archive link. There you will find some figures that I specifically made for Poser 3. They each contain a readme giving detailed instruction of how to install them. The readme also contains other web links that may help. You'll be able to use the same information on other figures also.

I am using windows XP and winzip does not have the 'Use Folder Names' option. It just dumps them altogether in the same folder. How do I remedy this? Any suggestions?

dialyn ( ) posted Wed, 12 November 2003 at 8:14 PM

Attached Link: Where to put the files

You can file the folders manually, or get a (free) zip opener that works more efficiently. There is a list of what goes where here: http://market.renderosity.com/~pzr/extensions.html ... scroll down...it's in the third table, I think.

PhilC ( ) posted Wed, 12 November 2003 at 8:18 PM

I also have Windows XP. Here is a screen shot of Winzip version 8.0 . Start by going to File/Open and select a ZIP file. Next go to Actions/Extract and in the popup window select "Use folder names". All my Poser ZIP's should be extracted to the folder that contains the Poser.exe file. This is normally C:Program FilesCurious LabsPoser 4 (or 5). You'll find that most folks use this convention. If you find one that differs from this then just extract it to a temporary folder, still keeping the folder names. Now copy just the Runtime folder into your existing Poser folder.

There might be a 'recurse subdirectories' preference (it was in Pkzip..;) Check Greylight's site, and possibly Space Storie (Anthony Appleyard) for some Poser 3 stuff..Poser 3 sets up a large number of folders..I don't have a copy here, or I could tell you, but depending on what it is, there's hair, figure, etc. kind of directories.
Also drop by Ron Knights' site for beginning tutorials, they can be right helpful (I've got a thread in the 3d links forum here with a file with many Poser tuts..but I'm still culling the dead sites out of it..most of the above-mentioned are there).

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

In addition to the things said before, here are a few links I have collected for Poser 3 stuff (oh, and first off do a search for Poser 3 in the Poser forum, there are lots of posts with informations). Many of the old links don't work anymore, though, since many many sites are dead now. I know offhand of these still working URLs besides those mentioned above: Winscape 2001: Poser 3 download page at http://members.lycos.co.uk/poser3/ has models and textures GreyLight: Poser Archives http://www.greylight.com/poser.html PhilC has a nice collection http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~pcooke/graphics/examples.htm Jackie's Stuff for Poser has several old things http://www.angelfire.com/ok2/jackielwn/index.html Confusius has some morph-figures for P3 http://confusius.net/ Morphography tutorials tells you what still works in P3 http://www.morphography.uk.vu/poser3.html There used to be a great texture resource for P3 by Helen on Poserosity, but that link is dead now and I could not find a valid one for "Strike a Pose". Should get you started. Just try other things and most often, after clicking on the OK button of the error message I did get the things to work. Of course there might be problems especially with transparencies and textures not made for P3, you'll have to cut&paste a lot to get P4 textures matching on the P3 texture templates. Props shouldn't be to much of a problem since many of them do have an obj file which you can import easy, if the PoserProp format won't work.

I have some tutorials which may help (and some which won't, but ignore those). :D

which character models work with poser 3? Any advice?

Look at Bryde's list...there is an article on just that topic (and a lot more). Great deal of reference material here. I'm impressed. :)

Last time I was at http://home.online.no/~kjellil/ Staale Loseth still had some Poser 3 stuff there [via a link]. Not sure if that is any help or not. Another site that offers templates for Poser characters version 1-3 is http://www.saucier-pages.com/poser/index.html
