Subject: Howcome MP and Free Stuff are so dead?

FishNose ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 1:24 PM · edited Mon, 20 January 2025 at 9:55 AM

This place normally hums with activity - right now there's nothing happening. The MP has almost not had any new stuff the last 4 days.... and Free Stuff is standing still too. What's going on? Anything to do with last week's HW troubles? :] Fish

The MP has been slowing down for the last 2 months & I don't mean the speed of the site either. Maybe you remember quite a few Merchants left in September & more have been leaving since & it'll be a long time before any new merchants can replace them. An old Merchant with 50+ items in his/her store quits to be replaced by a new Merchant with 1 item in their store. Plus there's only a few innovative Merchants that really stand out at the moment that haven't already left for other stores.

Mason ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 3:25 PM

Well plus how many skin textures can people make before the market is saturated. Perhaps most of the desirable items have been made and its not worth it to continue. Also, exposure has got to be a big problem for market people. Except for being on the first page of the What's New list your stuff gets buried in with dozens of other market people. There's no exposure and very little spontaneous buy stuff. The store has those new pop ups but I've noticed a lot of these are basically the same popular items appearing again and again. I can see openning your own store or going to a smaller store with less payout to get more exposure. I think the store needs to have theme lists. Basically have a week of hair models listed, then a week of buildings, then a week of skin textures etc. that way stuff in the store gets push up to the top of the pile now and then. As it is, unless someone does a search, your item probably won't get seen by a customer. Spontaneous purchase is one of the best way to get items sold.

plus a lot of ppl are scared off of posting - too afraid of being accused of anything nafarious when harm isn't there intention. to many chiefs and not enought indians around here anymore

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 4:11 PM

for almost a week? It was virtually impossible to upload anything for awhile...it may be that the merchants, like other people, held back because the Renderosity system was so up and down for awhile. It could be this also caused a slow down in approving marketplace items. I'm not saying I know this for sure...but it strikes me that there is more than one explanation available.

FishNose ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 4:16 PM

Hmm.... another thing that would liven up the MP a whole lot would be 2 things: 1. Storewide sales as at DAZ and RDNA 2. A lower base price level - nobody else has a floor of $5 that I know of. Both PPros, RDNA and DAZ do the superlow price thing - Platinum, Real Deal etc. :] Fish

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 5:17 PM

Fish, one big difference between this place and Daz and RDNA is that this place ONLY sells brokered stuff. If there was to be a store wide sale, who should cover the cost? See, even at Daz, the BROKERS didn't participate in the latest 50% off sale. Lower prices? Well as much as I love to buy cheap stuff myself, I must say that if Rosity should make say 2.50 $ items, it would leave only 1.25$ to the merchant. That's simply too small a revenue. At that price you could as well make it totally free. On the other hand I haven't got any better suggestions on how to boost the sales :o( Apparently even the coupons aren't of much use. At least I haven't noticed an increase of my sales when a new coupon is issued.

"That's simply too small a revenue" trekkie, yes I know this must be a problem.... and the market is so massively saturated these days. When I compare what I was willing to pay for something a couple of years ago, and then look at what I tend to pay for similar items these days... we're talking maybe less than half the money, as a rule. In the space of say 18 months or so, if comparing my purchases here at Rosity now with those from the beginning of last year, a LOT has happened. And of course the competition has increased enormously between sites too. :] Fish

Lyrra ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 5:44 PM

and add to that Rosity's new rules regarding new merchants not having more than 3 products until they gross $300, and existing merchants under that cap are not allowed to add more products until they hit a $300 total gross. That I think, is the stopper more than anything.

As a regular customer, the coupons work for me. I buy a lot of stuff here.

'See, even at Daz, the BROKERS didn't participate in the latest 50% off sale.' But they will be participating in the next one. Watch DAZ for details. mac

Zarabanda ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 6:44 PM

I think quarker is an excellent new merchant. What bothers me more is the lack of quality at DAZ. I may be in the minority here, but I haven't seen anything "must-have" there in at least six months. I just don't feel V3 and M3 are major improvements. In fact, they have those dreaded gumby shoulders.

Mason ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 7:24 PM

Zarabanda - I agree. Not to knock people but I've seen some pretty crappy items for $5, $10, $20 etc. Also I've seen really good stuff for cheap. I think dropping the base would create more havok than its worth. Right now people sell a single tiny item for $5. With no lower limit I'd bet a lot of items in freestuff would end up in the store. Of course you don't have to buy any of it buy sifting through tons of tiny items doesn't make for a pleasurable shopping experience.

Zarabanda ( ) posted Tue, 18 November 2003 at 11:17 PM

Mason, you're dead on. I've heard the argument that one man's garbage is another man's gold...blahblahblah...but in all honesty I miss the days of a rosity MP with more quality then quantity. and when you have masters like Koz and Maya giving away outstanding products that could sell like hotcakes, it kinda sews a whole in your pocket.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 2:06 AM

I don't find the coupons worth anything. The last one said I had to spend $35 to save $3.50? I don't think so. That is a bit of cash to spend at one time after I convert my money. My last buy was quite a few things and still never came close to that number. I have noticed quite a few low quality stuff in the store. Makes me think it's just to say, "Hey, I'm a merchant," and have the privilege of the merchant's forum. The slow updates give me a chance to catch up on some of good stuff. There is quality for cheap if you look.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 2:12 AM

beryld, about the coupons: That's my point exactely. The amount you have to spend is far too big to be worth anything. OKlast month I did use a lot of money on the MP and had I bought it all at once I could have used a coupon and saved a few $, but the point is, I do NOT go out to spend 30 or 35 $ at once. So to me, the coupons are worthless.

I'll chime in on the coupons - yes, I find them worthless. Not only that, I find they run for too short a time in which you can apply them. If they were valid a month, then I would probably pile stuff in and apply the coupon and buy it. But no, I have to buy everything in the space of days. That just ain't gonna happen. As for the pricing... Actually I find myself browsing Daz Plat Club, RDNA's Savers, Poserpros Club items a lot more these days. I bought some items here which when I installed them were beyond atrocious and I was disappointed. (And it wasn't cheap either) I'm not a huge buyer, but I do buy, and regularly. Some of the things I bought recently were absolutely outstanding (Fancy and Heavenly Hair spring to mind) I usually see something and I'll drop it in the cart for a few days, seeing if I still want it in a couple days. If I keep finding myself going back to it - I usually buy it. In some cases... I grab it right off the bat. (Heavenly Hair. OMG I just HAD to have that.) So there are two categories for me: See it, and gotta have it NOW. Instant buy. See it, add it, think about it. Maybe buy later, maybe not. I do the same at a lot of places. I usually hesitate somewhat on the RDNA stuff because my taste tends to run to the expensive there. Poserpros... same deal, but I usually get all the ones I want because a lot of the stuff is $2.49 (or so). Plat Club - same thing, with the only difference that the 30% off regular stuff makes me buy the higher items more often as well. So there you have it. That's how I buy. Silke P.S. I'm not a merchant. This is for feedback to the Merchants and R'osity. You guys should run a BUYER SURVEY!

Just remember that (most) merchants are buyers too ;o) I'd like to see the coupons last for something like a month too. At least that way there would be a slight chance thatI could actually pile together enough stuff to make it worthwile :o) And now excuse me. I gotta see what this Heavenly Hair is...

Phantast ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 5:26 AM

I put things in my wish list when they appear and often buy them weeks or even months later, as I need them. So an item buried on page XXX can still clock up sales. I'll also use the search facility to look for specific items (but obviously looking for "texture" or "character" is not much of an option).

RHaseltine ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 6:16 AM

I've used several of the R'osity vouchers to clear stuff off my wishlist (sorry, Trekkiegrrrl, it hasn't been your turn - yet ;) ). Things seem to have eased, but there was a spell earlier in the year when things that would once have been minor freestuff were being shoved into the MP, not always at $5. The cost of bandwidth and dearth of free hosting probably has a lot to do with that.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 10:02 AM

Heavenly Hair? Yep, as soon as it was released for PSP. It was the firt time I bought something here without thinking about it.

ShadowWind ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 10:42 AM

To answer Fishnose's original question, in the US, this two weeks are considered one of the prime holiday weeks for Thanksgiving which is next Thursday. There are a lot of people I know that are away on such a vacation. That could be one reason for the serious slowdown as well. ShadowWind

dialyn ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 10:49 AM

There have been new items posted overnight. And quite a bit in free stuff (especially for Bryce and Vue users). As for the coupons...I do use them. If I am heisitating between buying one more thing or not, sometimes the coupons give the nod toward the purchase. But then I'm an impulse buyer, which is not a good thing for my bank account.

sandoppe ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 12:29 PM

I've used the coupons, but agree with ernyoka1 and others on the amount you have to buy. They worked a lot better for me before I added DAZ,DNA, Poser Pros, Sixus, IW4, Sams, etc., etc. to my list of places to spend money!:) There are limited resources and a lot of stuff stays on my wish list for a long time here. I also didn't realize that there was the cap on merchants that Lyrra mentioned. That certainly would would be a stopper! I suspect it may take awhile to gross $300 here even with the number of people who buy.
