Hm....I may be stupid, but...what is this group for? I mean what are the plans you want to do with the group? A little more description would help to decide whether to join the group or no. Are you going to render SciFi stuff, model SciFi models or what? I think SETI is for searching extra terristical intelligences, so how does a render group fits in there?

Pardon me for jumping in... but everyone and their dog are on SETI. I think the one done by the National Foundation for Cancer Research is the more worthwhile. (Link attached) I don't mind SETI, used to do it for years now... until the above came up. (There are several along those lines) Besides... Let THEM find US. :P If they can find us, then that oughta mean they're smart... As a side note... if I were an alien, I'd make sure I turn my radio off when in range of Earth. If they are smart enough to get close to here, then they are smart enough to hide that fact. And if they are smart enough to hide and watch, then they will have a rough idea of what might happen to them if anyone caught them doing it. Think they'd be greeted with open arms? Not bloody likely. They are probably avoiding this rock like the plague. So lets go find a cancer cure instead :) SilkeSilke
SETI at home isn't a load of people with tin foil hats on their heads. Close, but not the same genre. These are not "UFO" nuts, these are people looking for signals from extraterrestrial intelligence, another planet somewhere in the vast Cosmos (hint) inhabited by sentient beings of at least our technological advancement. Most of the founders in the group are exobiologists and astronomers, not Art Bells. I stopped Setiathome some time back because: 1. It interfered with the normal operation of my computer. May not do that now. 2. The chances of finding a signal from a "concurrent" (one whose signals would be arriving at this time after traveling through space for hundreds or thousands of years) advanced civilization (despite Drake's calculations) are infinitesimal. 3. I agree with Silke that there are more pressing issues to resolve here, on Earth, for our OWN civilization. Despite the noble goal, my feelings are that the universe has very few successful sentient civilizations crop up at any one time (as it were) and that 'real-time' space travel (as seen in the Sci-Fi movie, program, book of your choice) is not possible because of the restrictions created by the known physical properties of the universe. If such travel were possible (lending from the horrid Fermi Paradox), what would you do (as a civilization) to find ETI? You'd send out thousands or millions of probes in all directions to do the seeking for you. At least one of them would have a good chance of success, especially if programmed/designed to find conditions of life.

kuroyume0161- LOL- don't EVEN get me started on drakes follies- LOL it's just a fun thing to do is all- who knows- maby we'll find a signal or radar beam from a long dead civilization. seti or cancer or balancing the books for a multinational corporation just for us artist to spread out a bit- let others know we are here- and maby get a few non-art types to look at our stuff kinda like selling art prints to fellow artist- best to bring in new blood or to network with others. here when I post a space pic I am preaching to the quire- when I want to show sci-fi fans and workers at nasa and researchers at seti- see what I mean
igo: LOL!!! are you Dr. Ellie Arroway in disguise??? I am a big fan of the ALIEN serial with Lt.Ripley, so I am not sure I really want anyone from outer space to actually find me...why should we think they would be friendly? Our earthly "civilization" surely is not... Oh...and just for the records....if anyone from outer space wants to send a signal to me, please use sign-language, cause I'm almost deaf ;-}
