Subject: What really happens to all of the files?

sturkwurk ( ) posted Sun, 13 August 2000 at 4:18 PM · edited Sat, 25 January 2025 at 4:20 PM

It's been brought up before, but I can't help but wonder... what does everybody do with the free files you download? For example, the 3D-CC has over 300 files, and gets thousands of hits every month, but only a few people submit images they've made with the files... as I've read it before... have the Poser files just become the modern version of Action Figures? Do they just reside on your hard drives, staying MINT on CARD? I really don't care either way, but just wish that if you make some images with the files we give out for free... share them every now and then. I even saw a rather new use for "Electro" not to long ago on a certain adult site... at least it was refreshing. This is directed more for the lurkers out there... Doug (paraprhasing Cage also)

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.

Well I download stuff .. Normally use it too but thing is that sometimes Ihave to download the same file a couple of times becuase it is on one of those Points to the pile of zip disks that occupies my desk And sorting through all of those would take longer than re-downloading ... Buutttt I will submit something that isn't for a contest ... Later

I for my person, download all things i like. My maxim: pick it as long as it's possible, what you have that have you. I'm not the best image-composer, thats why i make more poser-stuff. And i haven't the time to make poser-stuff and also creating some images. But like i sayd before, what i have that have i. And maybee it comes a time in which i was more attracted to make some pictures. But anyway, i have tell me also the question where all this stuff would rest. SHARKEY

Oh! Indeed! Doug! My son gets all the comic Characters out there! He does a lot of renders too! It's just that he's still too shy & unsure of himself to show it to others... Once his "Phase" is over, i'll show him the way to your galleries!! As for me i do a couple of pics once a month, and put them here. No superHeroes yet! Oh! Wait! I did 2 last week! Hmm. Doubt they'd be worth putting on your site though. Anyhow! That's a very interesting question... Marc

I often start on a scene & it becomes too involved & then something new comes up to distract me. Too many good things "out there" to play with. I have one poser model that I started two years ago & still havn't finised what I'd call a final render.

I have SOOOOOOO many ideas for renders, and SOOOOOOO many Dowloads for them that I think I'll be dead 3 times over before I get them all done. You Find me a 50000 MHZ prossesor, and I'll give you one an hour.:^) At that rate atleast it would only take half my life to finish the existing list of images to do. -Gabe-

I dload anything that I like, knowing that, in some future reincarnation, a piece or two of it might come in handy. :) ~Dave

I hear ya, Doug. I've made a few hot items available, namely some Trek stuff that is well over the 1,000 DL's as well as Paul and Polly (the P4/Vickie combos) and both are over the 1,000 DL mark, and I have yet to see ONE pic from these!

Hey Doug just take a look at my credits page to see where a lot of the stuff I download ends up ( "a lot" = +- 20% of the total mess). In my next installment I'll nearly double the size of that page. I'm using a lot of pre rolled characters as extras in a nightclub scene and I have a 12 piece (dork-o-rama) band. Plus which there is a glaring omission on that page that my conscience wont let me alone about. I tend nowadays to just grab the stuff I need (or think I will be needing). Funny thing is every time I offer to hand out the things I end up making (original poses, lighting setups, and meshes like the patio in the latest installment) I get deafining silence. Fact is (like it or not) (understand it or not) I would not be able to churn out HCK:FLA with such "regularity" if it wasn't for the work this silent, open, world-wide co-development team has done for me. jje

Renderosity is a mall and my hard drive is a warehouse. I download certain things not knowing if they will ever be useful to me or if an idea will call for them. Since I tend to be very repetitive in my work, I seldom need all of the wilder things I've downloaded. -Darth_Logice

I try not to use "commercial" characters (though I have DLed a few to use in the Avengers vs. JLA contest - unfortunately several have included notes that they can't be used for "any kind of gain" or to that affect, and thus many figures - including most Batman ones! - aren't legal for the contest, it would seem); when I take a character from the 3DCC site, it's usually to either see how something was done on the texture, or because it had a prop I needed for one of my own characters; I also need to get in touch with Sharby about editing The Lizard to match someone else's character for a project...

Heh... I've got 2 cd-rw's full of zipped up files I've downloaded. It's takes a long time to unzip and organize because nobody uses any sort of standardized system. So a lot of it just sits there. I've also got three full cd-r's of unzipped files that are ready to drag and drop onto my hard drive for reinstall if I should need to. As for using it all. I can only work so fast. :) I will download anything that looks like I may have a use for it someday. Because some of this stuff goes away. Often I'll download something when I only need a small portion of it.

Truth has no value without backing by unfounded belief.

um... "it's not the having, it's the getting." that's my motto. i have no clue what i'm gonna do with all these animals i have, but whenever i see one, i gotta get it! :)

nitreug ( ) posted Mon, 14 August 2000 at 9:39 PM

I download most of the stuffs on renderosity and other artists sites. I have ten CDs full of poser stuffs. Like arcady, a lot of this stuff is not useable easily. They needs props, different ways to make them useable, pcf, objaction mover, pz3, and so on........... The naming convention and the directory where the files have to reside make them obsolite very often. It is very bad for all excellent artists on this site because their work cannot be used easily. Maybe the artists can adopt a standard way to do things like when I bought from Zygote, it does always the same behavior. SO for your question, where the stuff goes, then I think they all go on Cd or Zip......Claude
