Subject: How do I? (Beginner question)

I have been working on an image and I want one of the layers to be in black and white (greyscale?) but all the rest of them to be in colour. If I try to make one layer greyscale it turns them all greyscale, then will not let me add colour to the image at all. What am I doing wrong? How do I make just the one I want change? Shanna :-) Please help me, it's embarrassing to be such a muppet!

Image > Mode > Grayscale will turn the whole image Grayscale. Select the layer you want in black and white then Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. Slide the Saturation lever to the left of 0.

Thank you very much. I knew it must be something simple, I just couldn't think what. Shanna :-)
