Subject: How to pose - a tut ...

Schlabber ( ) posted Fri, 28 November 2003 at 9:18 AM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 4:27 AM

Hi all my posing tut is now officially in beta-phase :o). This means it is being re-read from five persons. After that it'll be corrected and then available for download at - well you all will know then :--). For the German tut the date is scheduled for the week after Dec. 6th. For the English tut the date is scheduled for around X-mas - this depends on how quick the translation can be done. A few helpfull people will start with that at beginning next week - it is not possible to start earlier 'cause I need some first opinions about the German tut. So - what is this ?? Well, as you might have seen it was a bit quiete around me because I exactly wrote down how I work - with what I work and how I find my inspirations (etc). You can also say I wrote down my posing memoirs :o). I - for myself - think the results are really great. This "tut" is a little book with 155 A4-pages splitted into 7 chapters. It starts from basic things and goes up to complex combined posing. With that it should be possible for everyone to do her/his own poses (not directly - but with a little bit training). Not that I think it is so hard to do poses - but, well ... you know (lol). As you might can imagine this is a very big project - it took more than half a year to finish it all and finally there are a lot of people involved. May it as readers, as image-models or what-so-ever. I don't thank them now - I will do that when it all is done and the tut available. So far I can only spread the news that you all will get a big X-mas gift from me because this tut will be available for free :o) Happy posing (soon it'll be easier ;o) Schlabber

I'm also looking forward to it. I'm very curious if it's really possible to teach somebody how to create good poses. It's akin to teaching somebody how to draw. It's not easy to show somebody how to do such things. I've seen drawings, both Poser and natural media, where the figures simply do not have a natural look to them. Bodies have joints bent in impossible ways. Figures are stiff or defy the effects of gravity. To some extent, a person almost has to have an eye for creating realistic poses. I use Poser poses, such as yours, as a shortcut to get a figure into a pose that I want. It's not the end pose that I'm looking for, but whatever starts the figure off into something close to what I need saves me time. I've started cataloging (using thumbnails in Word) all the various pose files I've downloaded over the years and I'm coming to a conclusion that it's too voluminous to be fully useful. It can take longer to search for a pose than to do it myself. I'm trying to figure out whether there is a subset of poses that will move a figure into 95% of the positions that one would ever need (lying, crouching, etc.) I used some of your poses as a starting point, in my linked drawing, and then fiddled with each for an hour to get the poses I really wanted.

oh - thx so far ... :o) Gagnonrich: I know, it is almost impossible to teach someone how to draw, but you can teach the technique and give him or her the fun in drawing. If you achieve that - the rest will go by itself. The biggest lag you should have is your own imagination. Once you've learned the technique you can layout your own pictures. Poser, Vue, Bryce or whatever - those are only helping tools to do your art. I've always try to see it like this. I hope to fill the gap (for posing and a bit more) that you don't have to fear doing poses after that. That was the real intention of that tutorial - Maybe it has become a bit more ... but I don't want to tell to much :o). And finally we have the word "community". Community does not mean "Saleunity" - it means giving and getting back. I might give away something I could have sold bit by bit for a lot of money. But I believe there exists more than getting the most money out of something. Am I stupid ? Am I crazy ?? Maybe - lol Schlabber

Oh wow I have such a hard time getting a nice pose. I am usually able to find a pose made by another that works; recently I could not and have been struggling to do my own. The picture sits unfinished so not only do I look forward to this tutorial, but I greatly appreciate the help! Thank you very much Schlabber!
