hi! i just want to know how to turn on thumbnails in the free downloads section of this site. it would be a great help to see what the item looks like first before downloading....

If you have show pictures enabled in your web browser then the problem is simply that some of the thumbnails dont show up. This is sometimes caused by minor faults in the site that the link is in. It is a problem that I am sick of but there doesnt seem to be a way to fix it.

It would maybe be better if renderosity actually kept the thumbnail on their site so you would always be able to see them.

If the thumbnail doesn't show up, it's often a good sign that the freebie won't be available either. Often it will be something that's hosted at a free site whose bandwidth allocation has been exceeded. Or are you saying that you don't see ANY thumbnails?

biggert ( ) posted Sun, 30 November 2003 at 9:22 PM

it looks exactly like yours doozy, except without the thumbnails... at 3DCommune, 3DPMR, and all those other popular sites i have no problem.....all thumbnails appear......but here at Renderosity, i've been surfing the site for months now WITHOUT THUMBNAILS!!! NOT EVEN THOSE SMALL red "X" THINGS show!! page just shows up as if thumbnails are not supported by Renderosity.... i've tried playing with the Renderosity settings like "Compact ON and OFF," etc. but no thumbnails hmm.....wonder why...... any advice?? :(

biggert ( ) posted Sun, 30 November 2003 at 9:23 PM

oh....i use Netscape 7 Communicator.....maybe that'll help.... but if i can see thumbnails on other sites, why not Renderosity?

biggert, are you using a firewall such as Norton? I had problems a few months ago when Norton seemed to be conflicting with Opera (my fave browser) and wouldn't display thumbs. If I disabled the firewall, thumbs showed. I ended up reinstalling my machine a little while after that and the problem no longer occurred. I wouldn't recommend surfing without a firewall, but you might want to try turning it off and see if that solves the problem, so it gives you some idea what to try next. If that isn't it, you might want to try another browser to see what happens with that and again that might give you an idea where to go next with this.

Don't know about Netscape 7, but in Mozilla (which uses the same code base as NS7) there's an option to restrict image viewing to exclude offsite images (mainly to hide adverts). Look in Edit->Preferences, Privacy & Security -> Images. If this is set to anything but "Accept all images" then this could be your problem. Screen-shot above. -- Mark

Try logging out and logging back in again. Sometimes it's a cookie thing.

yggdrasil yup, in the Acceptance Policy i got "Accept all images" checked and nothing else....... momcat thanks....ill try that.....

Are you running any firewall software, such as Symantec Internet Security? It may be programmed to automatically block images with certain letters, such as "banner" or "ad". Or, it may block any images from certain sites that it thinks is advertising: GeoCities, Angelfire, etc. If you see a globe icon in the taskbar, then you're probably running the Symantec program. Right-click and select "Disable", then reload the Renderosity page.

nah....i've given up.....the only thing thats on is my antivirus prog.... i've been surfing this site for months now so i'm pretty used to it.....i wonder why i have no problems at 3dCommune.... anyway, thanks for all your help guys! =)

yggdrasil ( ) posted Thu, 04 December 2003 at 8:22 AM

3dcommune host the thumbnails on their server. Renderosity just links to thumbnails hosted on the freestuff contributors' servers. You haven't got any 3rd party pop-up add blockers running have you? Or added some sites to the "Block images from this server" feature in Netscape (well there's one in Mozilla anyway)? -- Mark

Also, have you installed version 7.1 of Netscape. There were several fixes after the initial release. Or try the newest release of Mozilla instead (www.mozilla.org) -- Mark
