ive been trying to upload one of my models into freestuff all morning, but I cant seem to figure out the whole web adress thing. I created a blank page at geocities to host the file, and i uploaded it. now I have a page w/ and adress and the file which is supposedly on the page. I thought all i had to do was copy and paste that adress into the upload part, but when I preview the link, it takes me to a blank white page. Im NO GOOD with html, and i can seem to figure it out--I couldnt even get the thumbnail link to work. please forgive me for my limited knowledge of this stuff, but I know im making this much harder than it is.....or atleast i hope... thanks

I use Geocities too and they don't allow direct linking for zip files. Set up a link on your page to download the model, then in freestuff here, put the link to your PAGE at Geocities. I'd add a note on the title that says (Link To Site). Oh yea, you can't link the thumbnail either lol...free websites suck. Striving is hosting my skies in freestuff, you might ask him :-) Doug

All anyone has to do in order to download your file posted on Geocities is to right click on the link at Renderocity and "save target as". It will immediately download without actually having to go to the Geocities page (which won't show up anyway).

Could be worse, could be raining.

so it IS possible to use geocities for free stuff? i figure after a few hits, the bandwith would be maxed out and the page shut down for a few hours....(which makes it really hard to get anything out) I also know of a few web hosts that will give ya a great deal on a site, provided ya wanna pay $5 a month...(which i don't have, unless my stores actually start sellin stuff..lol) hmmm will have to play around with it for a lil while, see what happens...later...lol (one of these days, i really need to update the geocities page i have with a new gallery...lol) Jen

I hear you. My Geocities page is currently filled with my trip diary from the "Great American Roadtrip" (April-May this year). I need to get the page updated and cleaned up a bit. I'm not certain if Geocities shuts the page down if you do the download from Renderocity. I don't think that type of access registers as a "hit" for them. But then, I could be wrong.

I have a geocities free page. Geocities won't let you pull images or files from their site without viewing the adds they load. If you setup a freestuff page and people visit it they can download from within geocities. The other thing is to right click on the link and save the target as...(whatever the file is). No matter how it's done, once you download 5meg/hour from geocities you get temporarily shut down.

Hmmm, well, I downloaded your free obp without going to the Geocities page and/or viewing their adds. I did it from within the Renderocity Forum with a simple right click. I have also linked directly to images I've posted at Geocities, had lots of people view them, and never got shut down. So, perhaps I couldn't do what I did, but I did it anyway ... and do it all the time.

Theres alot of free webspace out there. Geocities is probably on the bottom of the list IMO. Some even allow hotlinking. http://www.freewebspace.net/ has a searchable guide of some free webhosts. My site is at Angeltowns.com and although the page takes a few seconds to load, I'm pretty happy with them. I think they also have a page builder tool, (although I basiclly built mine in notepad.) http://www.angeltowns.com/members/dhood/ (I know, sucky site but its an example)

Create an account with angelfire.I've had better success with them on the linking. But it is really cheap to find a webhost. As little as $4.95 US a month: no ads. "Saving Target As" works sometimes too,if it is not a corrupted file and not able to unzip it.

Try Doteasy.com, free web hosting, 20 MB space, you buy a .com or .net for $25-27 a year and get the hosting free. I forget what their deal is for transferring a domain. You can pay extra for some bigger space and more bandwidth...but 20 MB is good for most people.
