Hey everybody. Here's a image I made. It still lacks the fluids. Top of can ripped from freebie available at 3D-caf Textures on can and bump map for the ground made with Photoshop. Ground texture found on mayang.com. Reflections created using a fake HDRI-sphere. Light created using 150 radial lights formed in a semi sphere around the scene (no sunlight). Rendered with Bryce4 (42 minutes, 2,6Ghz P4). Question before I make the next version: Any tips on how to proceed with spilled fluid / splatter on the ground? thanks!

yes problably.. but I'm using Bryce4 and I'm not planning to purchase Bryce5.

Bazze: Check out this image from Ornlu. There are other fluid simulations in his gallery. You may want to change your mind about upgrading to Bryce 5. :^) John

Yeah, Bryce 5 is way inexpensive now, and well worth the upgrade.

hmm OK. What happened with comments like "its not the tool that matters, its who uses it"? Just kidding! Any ideas where I can buy it? Checked Corels site and they don't ship to Europe.

Try amazon for buying Bryce 5. As to fluid splatters without metaballs, Lattices are the only answer, try the peter sharpe Tut....

and 'YES', your image is great without liquid ooze...:P

I'm not sure what other tools you have, do you have Amorphium, which is the originator of metaballs (then called Biospheres)??? It's pretty clean render, although it doesn't look realistic at all. Honestly, I'm looking at a few empty Red Dog and MGD cans on my desk, and they look nothing like yours. It's not ONLY the reflections, which have the wrong reflection settings, but the smearing itself. A few things : 1. No ego here, just math, I promise. 2. You cannot do proper aluminum in Bryce 4, period. 3. You will need blurry reflections to make a can look proper. If Bryce is your only paintbrush, you'll need Bryce 5. 4. You would need meat-balls to do the liquid, regardless. That's just how it's done, ever since Play did the math on Terminator 2. Anything less would not be photo-realistic. 5. You do not need so many lights. Can your eye pick up 150 levels of shadow gradation? Maybe, but even if it could, the shadows don't have that many pixels available, making it non-essential. Try 15, or maybe 50 at the most. AgentSmith convinced me of that one... and 6. Mayang's got great textures, but for ground-planing, they really aren't high enough in resolution. You could produce better results with a procedural, or DTE material. Or, simply set the mapping mode to "Random", and it will help. I can spot a bitmap-textured 3D render from miles away. These are just ideas, and I'm not trying to discourage you! I love your art and your website, and with all of your efforts you really should upgrade to Bryce 5.... We'll say the same thing about Bryce 9 when it comes out (they are skipping Bryce 6, 7, and 8, apparently)... (grins!)

I'm going to take that back, for a second, and give you another option... I'm thinking that if your bump is set small enough, you might be able to mimic the scattering and blurry reflections on these cans. Good luck, though, I'm not sure Bryce 4's renderer is fine enough to pull it off...

No problem - I'm not that easy to discourage. I got quite beat up in a different thread a couple of days ago (I deserved the stoning, the feathers and the tar but not the messages about my intelligence but that is a different story). I welcome this kind of feedback!

I still say that it can be done in Bryce 4, we all know metaballs are better, but, the piccy is one of Peter Sharpes, from the tut I linked above and it's pretty good

That's wonderful, but if I were you I'd put some specularity on those capsules. I don't know if this is precisely what you didn't want, but I think they would look more plastic-like and realistic that way.

Melansian_Mentat has a good point, but I would suggest looking at some real capsules. I think a slight reflection setting, say 5, and then see if the specular spot brings it closer to real. And I do see an improvement in your second pic, the reflections are more natural, less like a chromed mirror. And that music jumping out of the speakers unexpectly gets to me, too. At least put a closable window on screen that we can close so the music doesn't load. :^) John

Aye, it's just fine, I was only being critical for the hell of it. I know you can do lattice-water as well, but I don't know how you'd splatter it...? Anything is possible...

I agree about the pills needing some shine. I worked in pharmacy for a while and can't think of a single capsule that didn't have some shine to it. There are some drug sites that will show an image of the pill you look up. Maybe try a PDR search in Google? The image looks good to me otherwise...better than anything I could do anyway. :)

A little specualarity on the pills since they do have plastic caplets or gel coatings. Image looks great, honest. Would I kid you? Fabulous work on the cans and textures.
