Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 23 8:11 am)
I've noticed an odd thing about the rendering of CG people vs real people photos and noticed this in Final Fantasy as well. When filming real people, they wear lots of makeup etc to smooth skin and remove bumps, scars, moles, shiny spots etc. However, when I see CG rendered people, the artists go out of their way to show off every pore, lump, bump, dimple etc. For example, with this girl, if this were a real photo the nose probably wouldn't be shiny unless she was sweating. If she was an actress, she would never have a shiny nose or chin or forehead. Maybe on HDTV you'd see more detail but usually real people are smoothed out. This kind of reminds me of the old days of video games where the makers tried to create the most realistic renders they could only to end up with actors that looked like the puppets from the Thunderbirds. Its a cool render but it seems like some artists go a little to much out of their way to show every pore.
That's AMAZING! Talk about your ultra realism... Any idea what application he uses?

Can you say "geepers" wow! (not exactly what I wanted to say, but I'm not offending anyone lol) That is fantastic, I can't critisize not one thing about this because I try and try and come way short of this! You know the women where I am do that thing with their eyebrows, you know shave em off just to draw them on! So I hadn't even noticed the lack of "hair" to them until it was pointed out lol. Amazing.....
hmmmms her eyebrow looks like any ladies who shaved their eyebrow to shape it and then penciled them in to make it darker. :D not everyone's eyebrows are perfect and no one can draw a nice lil eyebrow without help.
i like the realism in this image though. weird grin but then, many of us have a quirky smile/grin... somehow, she made me wonder if she did something bad and hiding it :)
Man, I wish I could afford Max. Maybe one day when I've won the lottery... I think her smile/grin looks pretty realistic. But then, I also think it looks like my grin :-) Oh no! Maybe I am turning CG, heheheh

Personally, I don't see many things in this render that give it away as 3D at all. The face looks photographic beyond almost any CG face I've ever seen. Look at the teeth. He did a perfect job shading them to look absolutely real. Since everyone's smile in real life is different, that doesn't give it away. The eyebrows look almost exactly as they would on a girl who "plucks" and pencils them in, so that doesn't actually give it away. I think the iris of the eyes are the only thing that really give this away. They need just a hint more detail. And the ears are a bit too perfect. Otherwise, I bet you could pass this off to almost anyone who doesn't have a "CG-trained" eye and more than half of them would believe it was a photo... Someday I hope my 3DS Max skills can reach this level. Amazing.
By the way all, in case you haven't heard of 3dsMax before, don't be too anxious to go out and start creating images like this in any near-term. It takes years of hardwork and experience to create models like this (yes, I said 'create' unlike us in the Poser world where we just 'pose'). Go to www.cgtalk.com to see all kinds of amazing, talented work including this one. Modeling is hard part, requiring enormous amounts of time and technical skill. 3dsMax, Maya, Lightwave, etc, all allow for this type of creation, but each has huge learning curves and require much dedication. That said, you never know till you try! By the way -- see the hair in this example... THAT type of hair is what I was hoping would be around for us Poser users (e.g., Sasquatch, etc). Maybe DAZ | Studio will have a plug-in for this type of hair creation.
Generally very good - but the shadow of her hair on her temple and forehead is catastrophic. The area up from her collarbones looks really odd and her clothes looked really painted on. Lighting is so-so, too balanced between front and back. But that's compositional, nothing to do with the modeling. However, her face, the detail and the tex & bump are excellent. Most of all - she's very un-Poser indeed. Which is nice :o) :] Fish
I looked at the image with a looking glass - and could find only one place where it is cleary seen, that it is a CG-picture: the chain of the necklace merges with the skin of her neck on the right side (her left side). Otherwise I really can not see anything that a good image map couldn't explain. The little variations or the lack of them might be well thought out. Even a "perfect ear" could exist anyplace on the world ;-) Willy
