Subject: Grayscale terrain maps in Photoshop

Can anyone point me to some tutorials demonstrating good methods for making effective grayscale images in Photoshop to be used as terrains or symmetrical lattices in Bryce? Mine always seem to come out quite crude and i know some people do very refined work with this technique. Thanks
