Caustics? are the bright hard lines in the rock and coral to the left in the mats or are they the caustics in the scene? if so they need a little softening, with more scope IMHO....

This is just a personal preference, but I think beams of light (volumetric) piercing through parts of the water would look cool. In particular, maybe some striking the main focus (coral "tree") of your scene since technically, I don't think you'd see all those brilliant colors without a light source. I'm also thinking that the darkness and haziness of the water should maybe be increased as you go into the distance? I don't know for sure since I've never been scuba diving. It's just the impression I get from watching PBS nature shows :) Can't wait to see how you progress with this though. Looks like a cute idea!

Fish! They have a lot of different kinds for free at PlanIt 3D.

Yes, beams of light, the undersea world is basically all blue, unless it's shallow and sunshine hits something, then you can see the actual color of the object....

You want to dial in more fog and haze. I love it so far though.

well.. when you dive you don't see the colors. I once bled a coulpe of drops from my finger during a dive and the blood was green/black. Forget about the color red, especially in the distance.

There should be less colour because underwater there is less colour partly because there is less light.

my point exactly.

You need a little mermaid sitting ontop of the tree/coral/plant thing................and a bunch of pressies around the bottom.....Santa in scuba gear....

maybe soften the caustics, put something around the bottom of the coral to soften the harsh edge between the coral and the rock, or something to eliminate it altogether.

This is a simple technique I have used because I feel that it creates more natural looking undersea rock formations. Give it a try if you like! : )

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 10 December 2003 at 7:27 PM

All of the above, and how's about some plant life going into the distance directly behind the tree. There appears to be living things all around but nothing directly behind. But whatever you do remember to let us see the results 'cos it's looking very good so far. 8) Catlin

Aye, increase the source resolution on the coral tree, and soften it's base... The edge seems a bit too hard for real life? Otherwise, everyone covered everything already! This is going to be an awesome image...

Thanks all for the suggestions, I'll be sure to post it again once I make some changes!
