It took 58 hours to render using superfine with rays/pixel set at 64, ray depth set to 6, TIR set to off.

Aye, it does lok awesome, but I can't imagine WHY you would turn TIR off? Also, for how much energy going into this image, I don't understand why it took so long to render, really... Did you use a light dome or anything? I can't imagine why superfine rendering would help you on this one, perhaps premium effects would be better/faster? I just think the metal needs something in the foreground, or behind the camera, to reflect. The reflections look empty and dull... Just some ideas!

Everything you see in the image was created using Bryce Nuski! Walls, table top, window frame, window gate, window glass, celestial chart, eye glasses, drawing compass and of course the sextant itself and everything on it and its base. SDL, yes, I did use a dome lighting setup. I tweaked the material for many hours. It's at a point where if I go just a smidge up on the reflectivity, the material starts to take on an un-natural glow to it like a false color. The material has no ambience set to it. Too low, the material gets too dark to make out the detail. I did try the photographer's reflected card trick to no avail. I finally placed a radial light in front of the sextant and turned off the shadows. I really don't think the TIR would have made much more of a difference on the render. Only would have given me more on the reflectivity and optics but no real image altering affect. Maybe one day I'll come back to it with finer adjustments. But right now, Im all sex-tanted out! :)

How do you get your family colors so bright? Mine show up very pale.....

There is only a handful of bright colors to choose from and these are most of them selected to give the most contrast between them, all the others are dull. Also, it might be that I have my mesh resolution turned high for static meshes so the colors seem more dense. You can also change your colors to any color you want by "Alt" clicking the family color next to the "x" and check mark at the bottom of the family color list, I use HLS color scheme. LOL@Ardiva...while puffing on cigarette. ;)

Aye, you don't really have to hold down alt, just click the color and it iwll let you pick your own, for any Family. Great work on this one, Quest, I'm impressed by it's complexity and I think the materials are wonderful!
