I don't think I was a member yet when this was posted but here goes...hehe. well that post really was long after Jacketman. Most of the people in the thread barely remember it. Not really accurate :) Let's see if someone comes along with the full details. LittleDragon has the creator being JKeller Sirkrite is close. Stormrage may win this one if she can find the files.

I remember the JacketMan website. The logo was a silouette/cartoon of a man with a coat and fedora hat. I don't know if I have the files, but I'm pretty sure that JacketMan was a combination figure that was the meshes of the person and clothes combined to form one mesh, then made into a Poser character for animation purposes, before P4 and conforming clothes. Mason had a good tutorial on how to. John Ghastly still has a tutorial at http://209.92.41.204/Poser/
Wyrwulf, LittleDragon, and Skirkrite have the combined answer. Kudos to Wyrwulf for the details. Excellent guess from Sirkite though it was not the first figure with clothing it was one of the very first. Jacketman was made by JKeller prior to Poser3. At the time conforming clothes, which would be introduced in Poser3, did not exist. Jacketman was the a hybrid figure which the clothes were actually part of the figure along with the bodyparts. It was one of the first complex clothing figures and considered a huge revelation in the community at the time. From it many "preplace part with prop" clothing figures were being reworked to create hybrid clothing figures. It remained popular for it's style and look for many years even after conforming clothes but vanished amost completely when Poser4 was released and then Victoria. Jacketman predates transmapped eyelashes(we didn't think to do it believe it or not till much later hehe)

There were many combined characters, a lot of them by Mason/Mr.X, such as his Jungle Girl and Wonder Woman characters. Just my opinion, but I think that a combined character would be better for animations, even with the current software. There would be no pokethrough to worry about, for one thing. I'm still running search to see if I have the jacketman file.
For animation I always recommended a special transmap for the figure transmapping the skin out of problem areas.

Ha! I have it! Jacketman cr2 and rsr from feb 99. It was most likely available before that though. Feb 99 was Poser3 time, not Poser2. P3 came out in Sept 98 I think. Being the insane collector that I am, I have almost everything ever made. Almost! lol Very few of the files I have from that time had any readmes - except for PhilC's stuff (In this case his French maid) and a few other people. :] Fish
Fish I remember that site. Wasn't that the one where Posettes on the front were wearing glasses and such??

Still shows that the older Poser characters had (and still HAVE) lots of style and great uses, even today. I think the whole turn towards "toon" characters is a re-discovery of the "less is more" approach. Lots of excellent and free P4 characters were made years ago, and they are still very useful today.
PheonixRising wrote: "At the time conforming clothes, which would be introduced in Poser3, did not exist." Is that right? I didn't think conforming clothes were introduced until Poser4. Poser3 introduced us to Posette and Dork, but they were either naked or came in versions with fixed model clothes. At least that was what was 'officially' supported. I remember a chap called Adam Smith was one of the first to come up with clothing modelled to fit Posette in Poser3. They were static models, so you were very limited on the posing front. I'm not sure if those shoes above aren't his.
My bad. People had done empty clothes figures and people applied the same pose but they were not conforming. P3 and P4 were within a year of each other so I get a bit confused around that period.

Great thread...and makes me want to dig out some 'old gold'. I have a ton of stuff on 'floppies'..anybody remember floppies? LOL. I started hoarding stuff a year or so b4 I even had Poser or a CD burner, but knew that someday I would get it and wanted to be prepared. I have no idea what is on some of disks and spanned zip files. I do know there is surely something there I can use, but at any rate do need to transfer them to CD b4 floppie drives become extinct. [Oh yes, some of the disks are true 5 1/4" floppies...I still have a drive on my old 486DX machine to run those!!]

Okay doing a memory check. Not sure how many are even still around to remember this. Here is the question "what is/was jacketman" more points for specifics and details. Bonus Question: When was jacketman popular?
