Subject: Important Gallery Image Information

deemarie ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 2:47 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 2:48 PM

Good news Bad news time :(

Those evil Rosity pixies have been playing havoc in the Galleries once more. If you check your Art Galleries - you will most likely notice several images with red x's on the thumbnails and on the Actual images - The bad news is that those images are gone from our servers - as in they will "most likely not be auto-reposting!

The good news is - that you can use the "edit function" found under your image thumbnail, to re-load any images that are now apprearing as a red X. By re-loading your images using the "edit Function" All of your comments will still be associated with your image.

The very best part is: this problem should not be encountered any further for new uploads.

Sorry to bring you this news - As it is not filled with any holiday cheer - but we did want to inform everyone to let them know what happened and how to correct the Red X'd images.

Looking for someone who can create Pixie Dust out of our Evil Rosity Pixies!

Dee-Marie

Great point was brought up in another post - If you re-upload your images, using the Edit Function - it does NOT count against your normal daily Gallery upload. In other words - you can still upload a new image no matter how many images you upload using the Edit Function under your image thumbnail. Dee-Marie

Is there absolutely no way for Renderosity to recover the missing images ? For some of us, that is alot of images to reupload.

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 3:27 PM

You realize that some people have quite large galleries, and that they may be uploading an entire gallery? How could this have happened? I have 105 images of which 90 are red X's, this is going to take the better part of a day to remedy, imagine how long it will take for those on dailup....:

Oh boy! :( It's just being one of them days and this isn't the worst part. ;)

geoegress ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:10 PM

I am on dialup- might as well move my gallery somewhere else that has backup

TheBlindBat ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:15 PM

There's no possible way Rosity doesn't have backups, even older ones. Since all images prior to October seem to be gone, even an older backup would suffice. I know a lot of peeps who don't have backups of their images. They trusted Rosity to store them... :(

TheBlindBat ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:18 PM

Make that July 2002 through October 2003 are missing if peeps are correct. That's a lot of images. I feel for the artists. :(

TheBlindBat ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:19 PM

or September 2003. lol. Well, anyway, an awful lot of work. My head's still spinning thinking of how many images that must be...

FishNose ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:21 PM

If this is the case, the Renderosity Galleries have suddenly become irrelevant. It means that about 99% of all images ever posted here are gone. How many of the artists involved are going to repost everything? Some of them have hundreds and hundreds of images gone. The last 2 months are still there, the rest is gone. Everything since 1999..... Oboy. I suggest Rosity find a backup. Even if it is fairly old. Because this is serious business. :] Fish

BigRedKane ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:25 PM

ummm...I'm sorry to say this, but in this day and age of computing any competant host would have had a BACK-UP.
Since the hard drive I had some of my last images went down, the only record I have of those images was the one's here.
If Renderosity was planning on clearing their servers I would have appreciated some advanced notice so I could back my images up.
Also as previously pointed out, those fortunate enough to still have the images on their drives will have a lot of replaceing and uploading to do.
This is totally unaceptable in this day and age and as my ISP offer me 50 Megs for free I think I'll host my images there and wave goodbye to Renderosity.
Renderosity WAS a good community, now it's just a money munching heartless beast with no community spirit.
With all the other probs I think this is the final straw.
Goodbye.

Lucy_Fur ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:37 PM

Please correct me if I'm wrong - and I'm known to be - I seem to remember, a loooong time ago, Renderosity implementing a back-up server specifically for the purpose of backing up gallery images. Do I need to need to up my intake of gingko??? Someone help me remember....

FishNose ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 4:42 PM

I see now that stuff from before May 1st 2002 is still there. That means that 16 months are missing. Not 99% exactly, but very serious. :] Fish

This is a file permission problem. The images are still there and will be available shortly. This came up as we were working thru a problem folks were having uploading today. Just for the record - we do backup our servers nightly, weekly, and monthly. Tim

ShadowWind ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 5:16 PM

Hope this can be resolved, as it would be a major bear to reupload every image back to the gallery. I just hope this fix works better than the random one awhile back where I had to reupload a bunch of images that never did come back, that were said to comeback... Mojo: In answer to your points... 1> It is expected of servers that are professional grade to have backups of everything they have that they can pull back in case of accidntal problems. Rosity is a commercial server, so it's not unreasonable to expect such a backup. Tim says they have them, so hopefully we'll see the return of the images shortly. 2> I have backups of most of my pictures (except I seem to have lost two or three of the 2D ones). I think most people do backup their works, but to replace what is in some cases 50-300 images is quite a job, especially since some don't keep the thumbnails. 3> People do go past the 1 or 2 pages when looking through a gallery. I get comments on my older pictures all the time by new viewers. ShadowWind

Thanks Cherokee

Sorry if I am going to come off like a bitch, but at this point, I don't care. I don't know what is happening to Rendy lately, but it ssems that it's really gone to hell in a hand basket. Alot of people don't have backups to their images for what ever raason. This is ridiculous. I have now lost 6 pages of my work! I am NOT going to reupload them, I am on dialup, do you know how long that would take? I am so glad that I DID NOT opt to pay the 5 bucks a month as I had planned to. I know now that would have been a mistake. I hope for those people who did, you WILL use the backups that you said you had a while back. I have noticed that you have done alot of fixing around here lately. Your fixes seem to bring more problems. I like the old phrase and agree with it even more now... "IF IT'S NOT BROKEN, DON'T FIX IT!"

JoeBlack ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 5:35 PM

I lost maybe 24 images not including thumbnails, and yes I backup on cdr/cdrw and my own site. But the question is can I be bothered to reupload? I don't know LOL Sure does suck :/ I know people who lost far more than me :( 1)do all those people who paid $5 extra to upload more than 1 pic a day now get a refund for all the images they may have lost? If not, why not? (Incidentally I'm not one of them). 2)And you never answered Lucy_Fur's point about you purchasing an additional server for precisely this eventuality. What's that about? Thanks a lot! :/ JoeBlack

Well... it would seem to me that if it's a file permission problem, that the problem is easily solved, although time-consuming and disk-crunching... change the file permissions. As for those people who don't have backups of their own stuff because they believe Renderosity would be here forever and ever, welcome to the Internet. Servers come, servers go. Even hard drives can be corrupted and files go missing from time-to-time. Backup? Sure. But why complain about the backup of their system if you can't even backup your own? Not to sound like a pain in the ass and a bitch, but if you don't have the sense enough to keep a record of your own stuff on some disk that is within easy reach of yourself, then you don't really have the right to complain about the file keeping of other free sites that do the hosting for you. I've lost countless websites in the past due to the host just up and leaving. Is it the end of the world? No. Why? Because I also have my website on my computer! Of course, I have like 6 hard drives... so I can do that. But since my website isn't that big to begin with (I believe around 3 megs), I think I can afford the space. If you're afraid of this happening again, then you've learned something through this experience (I hope). Worried you can't store your own stuff on your own computer? Don't have extra CD's, DVD's or FLOPPIES laying around? Upload it to multiple servers. They're pictures for crying out loud. 99.9% of the free servers out there accept pictures. Ok, that's enough of my ranting and raving about the issue... have a good holiday.

kingkyle ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 5:45 PM

Blasted!!.. you know this is the second time ya done this... from the last "upgrade" which im still waiting to see the improvements to this i sure hope ya can fix this because im really getting tired of these accidents/bugs or what ever ya call them rosity became big because of its way with its artists... that rep. can be easly lost

-Yggdrasil- ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 5:48 PM

...88.8% of those 99.9% free servers would probably disappear by this time next year. So be careful where you multi-source to. Thank you.

Lucy_Fur ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 5:52 PM

This is a file permission problem. The images are still there and will be available shortly. This came up as we were working thru a problem folks were having uploading today.

Well then I'm confused again. The initial announcement stated that these images were gone from the servers.
Does your statement indicate that the images were 'found' while you were working through an uploading problem??
Was this uploading problem related to people trying to replace their missing images or just a general uploading problem?
Or was the file permission problem what was causing images to appear to have been erased from the servers??

Also - as far as ppl not having backups of their images. Consider this a blessed second chance to do so. I feel for anyone who doesn't back up - because I don't always do so either even though I know better. Really, I do! And yet...I still don't always. And I know that it's my own damned fault if I don't and really shouldn't blame anyone else for it..... ;)

-Yggdrasil- ( ) posted Wed, 17 December 2003 at 6:05 PM

...I, too, don't backup my hard drives like I should. If one crashed, I'd be up the creek without the proverbial paddle. -_- Sad, but true. It's happened before, it'll most likely happen again. But, since no one hard drive (except the music one) truly has anything I can't really recover with a little effort anyways, it just turns into a time-consuming disk-crunching process for me. I don't blame anyone else that does their backups or anyone that doesn't, so I see no reason for anyone here to do so.

Boy I hate flame posts...

Thank you, Tim and I appreciate that. I wasn't worried about my gallery ;) Altho now (taking nothing away from Dee who is a very nice lady) - for a seeming lack of communications or perhaps maybe just a misunderstanding amongst the ptb with the behind-the-scenes goings on, there is now this huge furor to deal with.....

deemarie ( ) posted Thu, 18 December 2003 at 6:57 AM

This was all my fault and I take full blame for the misunderstanding, and you can not even know how horrible I feel that I put even one person through the trouble of uploading their gallery images when they did not need to.

In my eagerness to get a message to everyone to let you know what had happened - I misread a communication from the programmers.

I promise to not let this happen again - and will be more diligent in the future to be sure and check my facts over serveral times, before posting to the community.

I appologize to everyone, and I am as happy as everyone that the images are all back up and running again.

Sincerely,

Nah - I've worked for sites, I should know how these things can happen...lol Is there any way to change how the editing function works though? Every time I edited an image it brought me back to the begginning of the entire gallery instead of back to my personal gallery page that I was on. I only have 3-4 pages so it wasn't that bad, but it was still a pain in the neck ;) I think that was making me grumpier then having to upload the images did! lol I wish you a wonderful hoiday season as well, and a happy and healthy new year! JohnRender ( ) posted Thu, 18 December 2003 at 12:56 PM

I agree with the poster above regarding the "fixes". Renderosity has been up and running for how many years, at 365 days a year? So why is there a need to "fix" the galleries? Did they suddenly stop working? Had they not been working fine for all these years? Please stop "fixing" things... especially when the fixes cause more problems. Or, if an announcement will cause a wide-spread panic, at least double-check the facts before posting. Telling everyone that they have to re-upload hundreds of images is more than enough to cause wide-spread panic. Conspiracy alert: unbeknownst to most people, this is yet another step in the global plan to get people to leave the site. This way, the "complainers" will leave and the rest of the people will enjoy faster-loading pages.
