Subject: Updating Poser, Lost Ability to Import Objects

moushie ( ) posted Wed, 23 August 2000 at 5:39 PM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 9:16 AM

I put in the latest Poser 4.02 fix today (can't remember where I got it from). I thought everything was fine but now discover I can't import objects of any format. My import options are limited to AVI footage, Background Picture, Poser Document/Prop, Poser 1.0 Library, Sound, and BVH motion. I notice that my Plugins folder is empty though I remember clicking on "restore plugins." Is there a connection? What's happened? What should I do?

Before you update I seem to remember reading that you should first delete the existing import/export plugins. Please double check but I think that's what I did.. PhilC

Phil: I saw that instruction. There was (still is) a folder named Plugins under Runtime and I moved everything out of it before installing the fix. I thought these plugin files had been restored when I clicked on "restore plugins" and, unfortunately, have deleted them from my recycle bin. Any idea how I can recover?

Ooooo nasty. I have this horrible, sinking feeling you are going to have to re-install Poser to get the original plug-ins back :{ Paul

Yep, Paul is right you will have to reinstall Poser then reapply the patch. The reinstall will not delete your custom files provided they have names that are not in the original installation. That said I always back up files just incase.

Thanks, so be it. (I backed up to another drive. Then, thinking things were fine, I deleted the backup.) I'll go through it all again. Can you remind me where I got the patch from?

Dont worry! Ive reinstalled a thousand times and as PhilC says, everything stays intact. My runtime-lib is about 1GB now so its quite boring to back up. However, PhilC is right. Youve got to make backups! Never trust a computer and its feeble parts. Live well.. /Jacko

Thanks. Any idea where the patch came from?

Link to Patch at Curious Labs Site here

Poser also does something people arent aware of and that is it will automatically search sub directories. This means if you placed your old plugins in a backup dir under the plugins dir, Poser will look in that folder as well. This can be a nuisance if you think you've removed something yet it keeps popping back up. You might want to remove any old file backups out of the poser tree altogether.

Now what, please? First, sincere thanks to all who have contrubuted comments. Sorry to be pedestrain about this, but here's where I am now: On one drive I have Poser 4 with the patch, and the resultant import/export glitch. On anothet drive I have a newly re-installed Poser 4 without the patch, but with the import/export functionality. Can someone please advise me what to copy to what -- in baby talk, so I won't screw up again?

Problem solved. CuriousLabs now have an installer with the Poser patch. I installed the patch right over my existing files (with a copy on another drive for safety) and everything now works just fine.
