THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Silly Questions from a Newbie

verlughmina ( ) posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 4:33 PM · edited Fri, 27 December 2024 at 12:23 AM

I downloaded a bunch of stuff from the freebies section and now here i sit, looking at my pot-o-gold, not knowing which folders each go into. So without complicating things too much, I need to know which folders to put these things into...

.mat files?

premade objects like glassware or buildings..?

textures?

terrains?

cloud presets and sky atmospheres?

.rdb files? what are they and where do they go?

water presets?

stand alone things like planets..?

fantfile shows a really cool fantasy background. dunno what it is but it was downloaded a lot from the site. i think i really want this one but i need to research how to use it because it is 10mb in size.

EEEEK. i know this is probabally annoying to you guys because everyone here makes gorgeous stuff and i'm all new new new... and i'm kinda intimidated about asking but i have to start SOMEWHERE, right?
thanks
Laura

well, if you have obj and dxf and standard file extentions, just put them in a directory that you make and organize it with file structure. I call mine "brycestuff" and have subdirectories for materials (jpg, bmp) and models with further subdirectories for categories like ships and sci fi. If you have obp objects, those are proprietary. Best to extract them to a temp file, open bryce, and add them to your library. As for textures, doesn't matter what format they are. If you want them in the library, just add them to your texture library. I would caution adding too many items to the library. Its easy to get the library very bulky and if you don't NEED to put them in there (ie, they are not proprietary), then don't (unless you use them a lot). Reason is, if you decide later to delete them, Bryce only deletes the icons, not the actual objects/textures from your library, so if you want to slim down your library later you have a manual purging process to go through.

Also, when extracting, and because most folks get the path information incorrect, I extract to a temp file then transfer to the appropriate bryce directory. This is especially true with skyz.

First, welcome to the Bryce forum, second, no question is a silly one, if you don't ask, you'll never learn anything Okay lets see, -.mat files go into Bryce/presets/materials/user this goes for any kind of material file (rocks, water clouds, landscape, tree trunks) -dl objects in obp format go into Bryce/presets/objects/user this applies to -anything- in .obp format(terrains, objects etc.) -image or photo textures, just add a folder for them if there isn't one already -Terrains, if they are greyscale just add a folder for them and dump them into it -skies and atmospheres, go into Bryce/presets/sky/user -I'm not sure what a .rdb files is so don't know where it goes -Planets, don't know, the mat for a planet would go in mats, but the only full size planets I know of that you can download are for Mojoworld, Bryce can't use them. However, I stand corrected if anyone knows more on this. When you download stuff always check to see if it is for Bryce, although sometimes the site won't always say, you can ask us and we'll let you know. This forum has the most helpful bunch of people you will find on the web.... Merry Christmas, have fun with your new stuff...8)

But be careful about overwriting any mat file or any other proprietary file that is already in your Bryce directory. If its a new file name, great, if its the same as what you have DO NOT overwrite or you'll lose stuff. I was just looking at the old backroom. There is a FAQ on file extensions, but no full blown tutorial on this subject (unless I'm blind). Anyone care to write a full tut on importing the pot of gold from our free stuff? I'm like up to my eyeballs in tuts etc, for another project.

.RDB -> TrueVector Rules Database No other meaning I can find. And the only TrueVector that I know of and I can find is a part of ZoneAlarm, a personal firewall. Why would somebody put that for download, I have no idea. Eric, I don't have the Poser pot of gold, and the page is inaccessible, but I will write a tut on importing stuff into Bryce tomorrow. I just came from outside, it's two o'clock and I will soon go to sleep.

Hummmm, perhaps .rdb is really a Ray Dream file? Anyone know for sure?

HEYYY thanks guys. I have copied and pasted the responses to look over while I move things around. I just know that when I started on my path in graphics, I started with PSP8 and then later as I learned more and more i realized all the neat new stuff I could put in there, what to be careful of loading too much of, and where certain files are stored and then accessed... and I know the same is to be learned with this program. Its my baby and I love it So I don't wanna be putting strained peas in its ear when we all know where it REALLY goes. hahahaha. thank you so much for all the responses!!! V
