Subject: Dynamic Hair Collisions

Nebula ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 6:18 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 12:20 AM

I am wondering how to keep the dynamic hair from penetrating the body of the model. I have collision turned on for the entire model and I have turned on collisions for each hair group. It still seems to flow in and out of the models back. I am not very familure with using dynamic hair yet so I'm sure it's me and not Poser. I am currently running another test so it may work this time. But if you have any ideas, I would be very interested in them. Thanks, Nebula

It is possible to get dynamic hair to react to collisions. There are three areas that have to be enabled. You must turn on Collision Detection for the Document window, you must go to each body part and turn on collision detection for the body part, and then you must select the collision detection for the hair. Then you must press the Calculate Dynamics button. But after having done all that, you must be aware that collision detection for hair does not work yet in Poser5. It is full of bugs, and your results tend to have hair jumping every which way.

Has anyone used the Wind Forse Field effect on the dynamic hair, does it work, if so is thier any tutorials on it. Thank you Papp

Yes, wind dynamics work on hair. No tutorials that I'm aware of. An example of how it looks can be found at the link.

Maybe with the coming release of the new Daz Studio CL will wake up and fix the Hair room and get us some descent tutorials on how to work with dynamics on the hair. Helloooooo CL. Drink some coffee and get a move on.

Wow! Now your talking! That would be a wonderful improvement. I know I'm new at that but it can't be as hard as it seems, you know? I haven't given up yet tho.

Zenman, Thanks for pointing out that collision detection for hair does not work in Poser5. I've had my rendering computer running 24/7 trying every config I can think of to get my hair from going through V3 during an animation. What a waste of CPU seconds. I guess I'll work on body movement in my animations and forget about the hair unitl CL get on a coffee IV drip.

NinaSteel, Wow, I thought this thread had died out. Nice to see people still respond over time. Thanks! I totally agree with you about working on figure animation instead of hair. I've been doing the same thing for a few months now. But I tend to build shots that don't show the head so that I don't have to add hair at all. My only real regret is that when you work with body images only it gets impersonal. I want to see the whole person, face, hair and all. And, at least for me, hair makes all the difference in an image. So I hope someone figures out how to get the hair to work. Or at least fixed in the next version of Poser. I wish you the best of luck! Look forward to seeing some of your work! Animation is my real desire.

Well, not working isn't quite accurate. With the release of SR3, Poser 5 does apply dynamics to hair in such a way that you can get decent renders. See my gallery for examples.

The current limitation is in animations. The hair does not work well in animations at all. I am hoping SR4 (rumored to be out in Jan/Feb will resolve some of the dynamics issues.

Does anyone know what SR4 will address. Personally I didn't notice any differance from straight Poser 5 and SR3. I would have thought that hair not passing through the body during animation would have been a no brainer. Some times I wonder if anyone at CL uses Poser 5 for themselves. Animation is my only interest and with all the trouble with hair I'm having second thoughts about poser in general. And don't get me started about the momory issues and the walk designer!
