OK, I have tried to solve this problem myself but still get to the same point. I have Poser 4 (German Version) for about 9 months now. When I first installed it on my old computer (Pentium 1 200MMX, 96MB RAM) it worked fine. When I installed it FIRST on my new computer (Pentium III 600EB, 128 MB RAM) it worked out fine. After re-installing this new computer - and I think I did nothing different than the first time), each time I try to get poser to render a movie it says (AFTER I have told poser HOW to render and WHERE to save the AVI-File!) "An Error occured while creating AVI-File" (Of course, as I have the german version of Poser, this is a german message, but this is the translation; in german, it says "Beim Erstellen der AVI-Datei ist ein Fehler aufgetreten"). Nothing more, nothing less, no pointing to WHICH error occured. After saying "OK" to this message (I have no other possibility) I jump back to the poser program and can try it once again. It does NOT depend on: - WHAT I try to render (different saved & unsaved files tried) - HOW I try to render (different adjustments tried) - HOW MUCH I try to render (Also different frame rates, etc. tried). I have had previously a problem (when I was STILL able to render BEFORE I have newly set up the computer) that poser sometimes freezes while rendering big movies, but it was still able to render smaller files which I could compose in a video editing program to bigger movies - no problem. But now, I cannot render ANY AVI-Files, and this makes me crazy, as I actually have a project with a customer which should be finished by the end of the month... well, I have finished the poser data, but cannot create an avi-file. I have ALSO tried to reinstall Poser, but this lead to the same end of the road. I also reinstalled the hard drive image of Windows which I have made some weeks ago... same success - none. Oh, and one more thing. If I render a pict sequence and try to get this in another program (VideoMan) to be saved as an AVI-File, I receive the same error - even if VideoMan does not depend in any way on Poser. Anyone knowing what this is? And having an idea how I could solve this problem WITHOUT having Windows (98SE, by the way) completely new installed? This would take days until anything works as I need it again, and I feel very bad about it... Thanks in advance Sabine

Wonderful files - but - I have seen what the problem is, but cannot solve it with the .key-file, as I cannot import it to my registry editors (seems to be NT-specific; I would need files ending on *.reg, not *.key!) Trying to read the .key file with a notepad did not get me further either. Maybe someone can mail the correct registry entries (.txt or a screenshot of the registry tree or something - I just need to know the correct entries and where they should be) for AVIfile so that I can change them by hand? I have the usual regedit.exe as well as the Norton Registry editor, so this should not be a problem :-) Thanks in advance! Sabine

Try this before : Control panel ->add/remove programs->Windows installation->add/remove components->Multimedia... Then remove all multimedia components,reboot and reinstall them from the Win98SE CD... Hope that works

Have you also tried using a differen't .avi codex? I found one or two codex's that would give me problems in Poser. I found intel indeo or Mpeg 4 give decent renders, compact and no real problems. Just a thought..

No success with de- / reinstalling the multimedia components. Also tried updating on Media player 7, same success (none). Where do I set up the .avi Codecs? Maybe I am just stoopid, but I cannot find this... Ahrg! I only have 4 days left if I want to finish this project in time, and if I reinstall windows, what I am slowly but surely afraid that I have to, it will take me at least two days if I work full time on it which I cannot because I have some other things to do as well... Anyone having other ideas? Or maybe a description WHAT could be corrupt with my registry entries? Kind regards Sabine

A codex is just a windows driver for a certain compression format ( I.E. windows .avi , mpg, bink etc..) When you start your animation, it asks you which codex you wish to use. a window pops up that defaults to windows .avi with compression of 75%. This is usually compatible with windows , so if you never changed it, its prob not the problem. Do you have any problems playing .avi files on your new setup? If not then I personally have no idea what could be wrong. Possibly Curious Labs would know. They seem to be quick in responding to these type things.

If your desperate , you could actually render all your frames as bitmaps then lace them together with a program like corel which can lace bitmaps together and create a movie from them.
