There's pretty much nothing that can import .max except Max, because it's their proprietary scene file, not a mesh file. As for particle systems, I don't believe that it's possible, though you might try exporting to .3ds and see if that works (I haven't used Max in a long time, so I don't remember much about particle systems..) I think the best you can do is maybe convert the particles to small spheres. I'm not sure if it's possible or not, just an idea I had that I haven't tried yet. If you can convert the particles to tiny spheres, then you should be able to export as a 3DS file.

Are there any plugins that could import .max files to Bryce? How about a particle system, is there any?
