Subject: Looking for a "Good" beginner book to learn Poser

Thorrax ( ) posted Wed, 07 January 2004 at 8:31 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 7:29 AM

Hello Friends, I was browsing the art gallery (great works of art to all) when it hit me, this software (Poser) is what I would love to learn. I have never used any graphics software before and I would love to learn. I realize many of you have been probably doing these beautiful works of art for a very long time, but, time is what I can make. I would like a book that is not to wordy and dives right into the works of the software and its capabilities. I want a book that maybe has illustrations so you can compare your work to the book so you know if what you have is what they are talking about. I hate books that will talk you through something, but dont give you an illustration to see if you did it correctly. Thank you Thorrax

the only thing i can really tell you is to try the poser handbook. I have the poser 4 handbook, and am seriously considering the poser 5 one.--Essie

yes I agree, tuts are another great way to start. I've also found that by asking tons of questions here on the boards I've learned a lot :O) --Essie

Stay far away from anything by Shamms Mortier. Far, far away.

;) dang, haven't heard that name in a while..;) Also, there was ..brain fart..Rob someone, I think who used to post here but got run off or left or something (boy is this a help..;) hate that, he used to specialize in beginner tuts..I really regret taking my database home..;) I can find it tonight, but I hope I've left enough clues for someone who's cylinders are all firing to figure out who it was..;)

Thank you all for the fast and excellent replies. I will do like some people do, and start from the beginning and see where it takes me. Thank you all Thorrax

Look for the tutorials by Geep, also Crescent has many of his basic tutorials archived on her website in PDF form. Have you considered online classes? I'm teaching POser 4 101, Poser5 101 and Poser to Bryce over at LVSonline.com

The Shamms Mortier Poser 4 Handbook was amazingly disappointing - even as a beginner I found I knew most of what was in this book (and was producing better results than those the author was displaying as examples of poser work!). His Poser 5 Handbook is much better, though admittedly this is only because of all the bits written by other people who are more expert in various aspects of Poser than Mr Mortier. I do highly recommend Richard Schrand's 'Poser 4 Pro Pack F/X and design.' Even if you're on Poser 5 you'll find a lot of good information in this book. And, as has been said, check out the tutorials that are available all over the place. And when you get stuck, you can ask a question here, and almost always get a speedy and friendly answer - there are some REALLY nice people in this forum. Morph

Yep.. your BEST bet to learn poser.. do some of Geep's easier tutorials, and haunt the form here.. you'll learn FAR faster and MUCH more then anything or anywhere else... Daz's forms are also a good place to check daily...

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

Another great resource is the Poser 5 Demystified video. Check out the link. People are LOVING the video. It goes through the new Poser 5 features but is good for beginners as well. Also check out www.3-AXIS.com for some demos of what the video is like. We just got a 9 out of 10 review from 3D World magazine. Pretty cool! All the best, Joe

I will add to Lyrra's comment about the online course at LVS. It is inexpensive and you get the experience of learning not only from the instructor but from the other students. I've taken 3 courses online already and starting the newest one now..Poser5.

If you decide to go that route, you need to hurry though and register!

I'm going through "Poser 5 Demystified" right now. I will say that I started with Poser 2 way back about 1996, and I come from a 15 year CAD background and have taught others Photoshop. So I'm not a complete novice. I find this P5 Demystified video very professionally done. It really has opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities that I had not touched on before in Poser. I highly recommend it, it's well worth the money. Gromit

Dr Geep says: The "Poser 5 Demystified" video gets 5 STARS from me. If you want to learn Poser ... get the video ... you will NOT be sorry. cheers, dr geep ;=]

I also recommend the LVS online classes. Best money spent and had a lot of fun learning! Lyrra is a great instructor (I took the Poser to Bryce class, plus a lot of other classes there). I think the registration is closing in a day or two at most, so please check this out. Classes are 6 weeks and cost under $30. Peggy

Once "Poser 5 Demystified" comes out on CD or DVD, then I'll get it. But I don't have a VCR anymore. :( Even though I'm taking class, I still love to learn from different peopole, since so many have their own techniques. Like Dr. Geep's tuts.... they are unique to him and their is no mistake that it is his tut that you are doing. For those of us that have hard time finding old threads......is their a place that ALL of his tuts are in one spot?

I also ordered PhilC's 3D Modeling for Poser, it arrived in mail yesterday, cannot wait to get into it! Never hurts to learn more, and never hurts to learn from a variety of sources. :)
