In an earlier thread, the topic of 'Heavy Metal' magazine came up. In my neural network of sometimes fleeting thoughts, the name 'Heavy Metal' sparked up a memory of an artist and a character that I completely stored away in my brain warehouse. The artist: Marco Patrito, an internationally known author and illustrator. The character: SINKHA from the 3D Graphic novel of the same name. Back in '97 I using Strata Studio Pro 1.5 as my only modeling program. A friend of mine, who very was into 'Heavy Metal' magazine showed me an issue that included a story illustrated completely as 3D art. I was taken aback by the way the 3D characters and environments looked. So amazingly beautiful! Of course, I bought the issue. I was also pleasantly surprised because all the character models and environments in SINKHA were created in Strata Studio, an accomplishment unheard of at the time. I never considered Strata to be good at organic modeling but I realized how wrong I was. For me, aside from multimedia and low resolution video games I saw human characters and the worlds they belonged to fully realized as 3D art. You could say, it opened my eyes to other 3D applications like Poser and Bryce. I was working at Apple computers at the time and came across the multimedia CD-Rom of the SINKHA and found the animations that accompanied the 3D graphic novel just as compelling (for its time, of course). Well, the following year I moved away to work for MetaCreations in Carpenteria. Same year I got married. A few years and a few moves later, the kid was born. I haven't thought about SINKHA for years...until this morning. Well, I'm happy to see that the SINKHA universe has expanded and grown in complexity. There is a new adventure coming out called, Hyleyn. I just downloaded the trailer for Hyleyn and it is stellar. The artwork today, as it was in 1997, is phenomenal! My questions to the community is: What first got you interested in 3D art or 3D modeling? Back then, what inspired you and what inspires you now? Who remembers SINKHA? -DefaultGuy

I thought that SINKHA-pation was a feature of jazz rather than heavy metal! ;^)

I love Heavy Metal Magazine. I still collect it to this day. It intoduced me to El Borbah, Corben, Liberatore "Ranxerox", Royo, Olivia, Bilal and the great Moebius. I have issues going back to the early 80's. It inspired me. Don't forget Torres, Rock Opera and the famous Bodyssey issue 1985!

Call it ....Heavy Metal

DefaultGuy ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 2:38 AM

Yeah, Moebius did some great stuff for the mag. I recall he did a type of western story line. Den was always a riot to read. Wasn't Howard Chalkyn also a regular artist for the mag?

Well... this discussion has got me hook, line and SINKHA.

But; yes, I remember it - I've got it. The folow-up, Hyelyn (if that's the right spelling) has the original story bundled with it on the CD.

It's not bad; good graphics (which were outstanding for their time, I guess) but a rather clich storyline. The follow-up is better; I'll dig the CD out and post an image to this thread later.

I started collecting Heavy Metal with the very first issue, the insert in National Lampoon, after living in Europe and purchasing the original pubication, Metal Hurlant. I collected the magazine for up until 1993 when I was forced to sell the entire collection in order to make a series of house payments because of an economic problem. There have been good, and bad, bits and pieces. I remember when the first movie (not that piece of fertilizer that came out with the change of the century) premiered and I was able to get a seat for the opening night while I was attending college outside Chicago. I had waited for years and for some odd reason, the only two seats in the house were the two where their simulated quadrophonic (remember that?) speaker system was centered. Ah, bliss! This was one of the major foci for my eventually looking into 3D graphics. When the software finally became somewhat affordable, I jumped on the possibility. Presently, I am learning the software so I can get these ideas out of my head and onto CD. It's only take a quarter of a century.....

" La la lalala. Sink, Sinkha song. Sink out loud. Sink out strong..." as sung by the Carpenters. Hey, cedarwolf. Yeah, I remember quadrophic sound! Wasn't it around the same time "sensurround" was introduced in theaters? - If you are learning Poser 5, the 3-Axis Poser 5 Demystified tape is a good introduction to the new features.
