I just wanted to clarify your question so people would be able to deliver your answer more promptly. You might want to take a look at this tutorial at Daz to see if any of the effects you like are addressed there. There are many good postwork tutorials...I'm sure others will be listed. :)

xoconostle ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 11:55 AM

Once you learn a few methods, play with them. If you have Photoshop or a similar graphics app, learn as much as you can about blend layers and their modes. You might also want to check out "Dreamy Photo" (at least that's what I think it's called,) a free plug-in from AutoFX. I believe you can get it at their site. Again, don't accpet the default effects...play around with the settings in the GUI to get the look you want. Better yet, create a "blurry" or "dreamy" layer, then drop it onto your original image so that you can control opacity. (If this were a cookbook, I'd say "season to taste.") I almost always add some glowing blur to my images, but IMO it can really get out of hand.

I am one of the few who hate blur I think. Here is a technique I use sometimes for sharp glowies. 1) Make and post work you image to final 2) Duplicate final layer above original Stylize>Embose so the white of the emboss mimic light as much as possible. 3)The Adjust>Cirves and move the center line down till dark grey dominates image eliminating majority of pale grey. You want alot of black to appear. 4)Guassian Blue this adjusted layer. Make it really blurry but not obliterated. 5)Now set layer properties to "Dodge" and erase anything to strong on face etc if neccessary. -Anton

I love magicians who tell their secrets. Does this make Anton the Penn & Teller of the Poser world? Kidding. Thank you for sharing that cool technique.

Here is a prestep to the technique above by using a bit of the popular "Diffused Glow". The glow color is determined by the background color. In this image I should probably have erased some of the facial glow since they can be quite strong. But that is the idea. The second image was used as the original for the steps above. Instead of using the final "dodge" layer at 100%, as I did above, on this one I only set it to 50%. You have to eyeball it depending on your image. -Anton

Thanks Anton thats great anymore secrets you wanna give out lol

tbarnet ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 1:06 PM

WOW! Thanks Anton. I had PSP for a couple of years but never realized really everything that it could do like that. I suppose it's my fault for not experimenting more. Thank you again. I might be able to do some of this postwork stuff after all. I know the effects you folks do is not easy, and a lot of it just plain good eye and talent. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

tbarnet ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 1:08 PM

Oh and Shain, Thanks for asking that question.

Those are great ideas, Anton. Awesome results!!!

This is my best trick yet. Been keeping this one a secret. Basically you need to paint texture on a layer that dodges it into the skin. So you are going to clone grey skin texture from one layer onto a layer that will dodge the skin teture into becoming highlights. You have to fade your strokes. With a mouse I find 8% a good setting. -Anton

PS: You can do a multiply or burn layer too for contours!!

The same technique as above can be done to layers set to other properties besides "dodge". By coloring your texture layers you can kill two birds with one stone by adding color variation while adding tetxure and detail.

Now once done you can add some simple "diffuse Glow" or any of the effects first mentioned above.

In post #12 and #15, the image has a mistake in it regading the layer options.. The highlighted layses are dodge and color respectively, not "normal"

I am definitely gonna try these techniques, Anton. I don't normally do a lot of postwork on my images but these look perfect for some of my recent pics.

I was just wondering if your pic in #13 is supposed to be a young Michael Ansara? You know, I Dream of Genie's (Barbara Eden's) real husband. Really great likeness!

PheonixRising ( ) posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 12:16 PM

NO guy in particular. Jusr what he came out looking like. I love barabara but know nothing of her husband. Will have to go look.
