Subject: How many of you hang your own work at home?

TaltosVT ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 12:05 PM · edited Tue, 03 December 2024 at 3:36 PM

My girlfriend and I moved in together about a month ago, and we're still in the process of decorating our new home. She would like to frame and hang my photos around the place, but honestly, it creeps me out a little bit. I don't know if it's the subjects of the photos, or just having my own work staring at me all the time that bothers me.

I did hang a copy of The Lovers in our bathroom (which has a rose decor), and it doesn't look too bad. I find myself constantly wiping smudges off the glass, but that's just me being a perfectionist.

Anyway, I was just curious how many others had their own work hanging at home, and how you all feel about seeing it all the time.

I have this one matted and framed in my living room. The colors seem to work really well with the decor in there. And I have a few pics of my kids here and there but other than that no. Not being the housewifey type the walls are rather barren... and we've only been in the house for 4 years! Pathetic I know. I'd like to get more prints up on the walls, but getting into decorating mode is a bit tough. My husband who is far more housewifey than I am, has said that he'd like to create a gallery of my work going up the stairs and in the hallway on the second floor.... I just have to make the prints... :~)

I am, therefore I create.......

Taltos,
That's odd you bringing this up. A friend of mine was over recently, and was looking at some of my photography as well as some of my acrylics that I keep laying around in my spare junk/bedroom. She kept on about that I should hang my stuff up where people that come over can see it. I've never really given it much thought as the majority of my stuff doesn't fit in with the decor anyway, but I guess
if your girlfriend thinks enough of your work to be able to look at it all the time on the walls, go for it. I myself am my biggest critic. If I had to look at my stuff all the time, I go nuts thinking about well if I had shot this this way and that.

I would not post a picture in here that I didn't think was good enough to hang on my own wall. Now having said that, and not being Miss Suzie homemaker, I haven't hung any of my work on my walls! LOL! I think maybe it is because I have looked at my images so many times I am sick and tired of looking at them!? I have a nautical theme going! So it isn't like my work wouldn't fit in either! Not worrying about any color scheme as I am a tad bit "eclectic". Now my two sisters, my mom, my grandmother, my aunt and a few of my friends have my work proudly displayed on their walls! Maybe I should shut off the computer, get out the hammer, nails, stud finder etc. and get to hanging?! Have thought about this many times, just haven't done it! ;) If your girlfriend likes your work, then by god, let her hang it! :) It is so funny as I read your posts, I see me in most of them! I guess there is such thing as being a typical photographer!? Why spend good money on art to hang on the wall, when you make your own? Brenda :)

I dunno - but I've never had any problems with hanging my own stuff on my own walls. I can see the idea that "I've never taken the perfect shot" - but I also realize that i never will.My photography is an expression of who I am - most artists are introverted, and I am no exception - but if I can't project my "ME" in my own home, I'm really fighting a losing battle. I would venture to say that a lot of us do the photography thing to express ourselves - because it's difficult to do so in any other fashion - so why should we not project that image in our own homes? When someone comes into my home, I've got "ME" all over the walls - so I don't have to explain who "I" am in a one-on-one basis. My photos are an escape from having to deal with it - my "ME" is on the walls - why else take the photos? You gotta show them somewhere, and what's more comfortable than your home ground? Wolf (but don't tell anybody)
