Subject: Speaking Of Fonts......? Why .......???

Michelle A. ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 4:13 PM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 8:25 AM

A friend sent me a freeware font by email I saved it and copied it to my Font folder in the Windows folder. I cannot get Photoshop or PSP to recognize and see the font. Am I doing something wrong?

Have you tried rebooting so it can be "picked up"? (not like I'm a pro at this but it seems that whenever I add one, I have to restart the system).

waves to Chuck Hello there! Long time no see! I'll try it and report back..... :~)

You do have to reboot pretty much. The fonts list is also stored in the registry, and that registry entry tells all programs what fonts are available for them to use. If you don't reboot the registry can't scan the fonts and add new ones to the list.

Hmmm.....rebooting didn't seem to work.... is there a limit as to how many fonts Photoshop can handle? Not that I think I have that many in there...

As long as it's in the C:WindowsFonts folder (unzipped), it should appear after rebooting. Not sure what else might be wrong but my first thought is that the font is corrupted or something. You might go out and fetch another free font (at one of the 1,000 places) and install it and see if you have the same bad luck. At least that would point to the probability the font your friend sent is OK and there is some other reason.

bonestructure ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 5:20 PM

Here's a funny thing about photoshop. Sometimes it lists new fonts waaaaaaay down at the bottom of the font list. I have no idea why. But try scrolling all the way down to the bottom and see if your wayward fonts might be there.

Nope, bonestructure they weren't there but I did some poking around in the help files and found that Photoshop also uses fonts in the C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeFonts folder.... I copied the font to that folder and now PS sees the font.... Did a file count in my C:WindowsFonts folder and found that I have 420 files in there! Yikes (time to do a clean out?)... still wondering if the amount of fonts in there has something to do with PS not seeing it in this particular folder.....? At any rate thanks for all the time you have given to my problem I do appreciate it! :~)

Yep, there's a limit to the number of system fonts you can have. I don't remember what it is, though. It must be around 420.

Michelle A. ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 7:21 PM

Now I'm going to have to find what the actual # is because I'm really curious.... Thanks for confirming my suspiciouns aprilgem. :~)

I found this answer......sharing it here for anyone interested. Still if 1000 is the limit than obviously I'm doing something wrong.

As to the Adobe Font folder...I looked in mine and the stuff in there is just, well, strange. And the fonts I have in my WindowsFonts folder don't appear in that one. So, I'm going to say those in the Adobe folder don't matter. When you go over to the Control Panel and click on Fonts, does the font you're looking for appear in THAT list? That might be another clue on what is wrong. I have XP. If you have W2K, I'm not sure if something is different there than for XP although I'd be a bit surprised if there was much difference.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 8:02 PM

One other suggestion...forward the font to me @ chuck_evans@charter.net and let me try installing it here. It's a freeware font, so there should be no problem, I'd think.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 8:18 PM

OK... I installed a font. It didn't show up in Word. I rebooted. It didn't show up in word. I went to the Control Panel and opened Fonts. Found the font there. Double-clicked it (opened it). Exited the font. Exited Word. Started Word. The font appeared. Not sure if that helps but it worked for me. At this stage, I'd give it a try.

Michelle A. ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 8:22 PM

I'm running Window ME. And they were showing up in the WindowsFonts folder but not in PS. When I moved them to that Program FilesCommon Files Adobe Fonts folder they suddenly showed up in PS. I do have other .ttf fonts in there that show up in PS, still doesn't solve the mystery, but at least it's working now.... and those red looking ones are postscript fonts....don't ask the difference I couldn't tell you, but those are the only ones that will show up in Adobe Type Manager.

STOP !! Don't load thousands of fonts into your OS it will give you problems. Do this instead. Download billions of free fonts on the web. Get a new program to view them with. There is some really excellent ones out there. Put them in nice organized folders. Need a font for word? find it, double click on it. Start up word. Notice it's there? Need five fonts in Word? double click on five, start up word. notice there there? Stop installing thousands of fonts. Install only fonts you use every single day. Even Adobe's program causes problems. Microscoft can't handle too many fonts.

MightyPete ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 9:41 PM

You problem is fonts have to be registered and dropping them into the font folder does not do that but from experiance it's bad to install too many any way read the post above. You have to add fonts the Microscoft way. In the contol panel fonts add fonts. Or just say the heck wit that and double click ont he file then start up photoshop that way it can be anywhere on your computer. Don't put things into the font folder you'll regret it sooner or later. Unless you use it every day don't bother.

Here is a better font viewer. I can't and don't have here with me right now the one I use but it's similar. A google search for this string will turn up tons of them. "better font viewer" free Just plunk that line into google. See using a proper viewer and your own folder system there is no need to install them just double click on the ones you need at the time. Installing fonts is one pain but the bigger pain is uninstalling them then discovering some program or document needs them after there uninstalled. Best to leave that folder alone. Oh BTW you must keep track of the ones you did use if you ever plan on editing the projects in the future. You need to open them up again then startup the application before you view the project. If your missing a font you need to quit the application find the font double click on it and start the app up again. It only reads the fonts on startup not while it's already running. Double clicking on a font registers it while it's open.

MightyPete ( ) posted Sun, 18 January 2004 at 11:31 PM

Woops that font viewer is not free and that search string does not work. Try this instead in google: free Better "font viewer"

kd_kedar ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 2:53 PM

Windows 98 can handle 700 to 900 fonts. & If we add mooore fonts ...its get confused & it may show us or it my not..... this might me happend... :~)

aprilgem ( ) posted Mon, 19 January 2004 at 7:59 PM

Some font management software programs will automatically turn on or turn off your fonts (wherever you have stored them outside of the system folder), depending on what fonts the file that you are opening uses. It's called global activation of fonts. So if you're going to be looking for font viewing software (I call them font management software), then you might want to consider that feature when you make a final decision. I don't know what's available for Windows other than what Adobe provides, but for anyone working on a Mac, there's Suitcase and FontReserve, among others. I've only worked with ATM and Suitcase, and both have global activation.

copying all the fonts and then loading them into the PROGRAM FILES/ADOBE/REQUIRED/FONTS folder. This normally has about 5 standard fonts that Adobe uses in it but now this folder forces Adobe to see ALL my fonts. i still have them in the normal windows/fonts folder for other progs. and apps. Ok - it's like cracking an egg with a sledgehammer but it works...
