Someone out there has been infected with the W32.Novarg.a@MM worm/virus. I've been getting "bounced" e-mails with this virus attached all day long. I would really appreciate it if y'all could check your systems for this one. Thanks, Kate

I'm getting these bounced emails too.

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 1:36 AM

One of the things this worm does is disguise itself as a bounced e-mail notice. That's just wrong on soooo many levels. Grrrr. Kate

I got one, too. I use web mail now to protect my machine from viruses. It makes me feel much more secure. I am running McAfee right now to check things out. Diane

I got one also. Norton nabbed it.

SAMS3D ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 4:15 AM

Yes, with strange emails I use my Web mail too. Thanks will watch out for this one. Sharen

  1. i started using web email loong time ago cause outlook automatically opens 1 email. 2. i got 2 AV progs in background 3. ive been getting those Mailer Daemons emails a loooooong time ago....this aint new to me....but knowing these are all scams i blocked em in my block list.....no more Mailer Daemons since then 4. some common sense is needed when trying to stay safe online...like if you get a Mailer Daemon Error....just ask yourself what are the odds this is legit....chances are its not...and if you get two or more at a time DELETE all at once cause you know its just a scam

To stop outlook form auto opening mail turn off the Preview Pane under View. but web e-mail is still the safer bet, or use Eudora or other mail app that allows you to just retrieve headers and then delete off the server and download only the messages you want. You can now get a Free version of Eudora but it comes with an add banner, gotta buy Pro to get rid of it. I have also been told Incredimail is a good app but haven't checked the new version myself yet..

Don't know if it's true, but apparently this one infects you even through web mail - at least that's what the talking heads on the news have been spouting off lately.

What I read is that it's an attempt at a DOS against SCO in Utah, which has been claiming the rights to Linux and threatening to go after Linux users for some reason. However, it's hitting everybody but the intended target. As usual, don't allow html in e-mail, don't open the messages and don't open the attachments.

I have better anti-virus protection than ANY of you! It's called a '166Mhz junkheap'. A 10-year old computer that I use for net only. It's gets infected? What do I care? I re-format it and start again. I've got no data on it, so there's no problem. And you can buy one for about $20. mac

biggert ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 5:51 PM

hey man....i got a BETTER AV than you!! heh....its called a 486 DX2 66Mgz with a whopping 20 Megs of SIMMs and 512KB of VRAM!!!! woohooo!!! online comps betta get out of the way when they see this speed demon comin man..... n you can get this for free....just pick someones thrash bins n youll find this goodie!! complete with motley crew stickers and cigarete burns!! thats the first comp i ever assembled....um thinkin of upgradin its use to a giant paper weight.

millman ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 6:16 PM

I'll see your DX2 66 and raise you an SX 33 COmpaq with sixteen megs.

Larry F ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 6:36 PM

Two 286s and an AMIGA 2000 in my home office closet! Ready to do battle, except the former no longer work and the latter is "retired"!! Love that 'miggy! Made a lot of money out of it some years ago! Larry

millman ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 6:50 PM

You'll never beat my Timex/Sinclair TS-1000. Yup still works. Whopping 2k ram.

Larry F ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 7:26 PM

I think you're right there! Don't think I can challenge that! Altho I forgot to mention my trusty Commodore 64, which I gave to my son (then a young teen, now a whopping 34!!) many many years ago, LOL!!! Boy, I guess we've come a long way. Haven't we? Larry F

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 8:41 PM

Oh boy! I surrender! I can see I'm up against some heavy competition here. Yer a buncha real hard-core junkheap users. Oh well..... me and my 166Mhz will just slink off into the night in shame. Can't beat a Sinclair with a whole TWO (count 'em, folks - Two!) megs of RAM. LOL. mac

Khai ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 8:50 PM

a sinclair with 2mb ram? oooh we wished! sounds like a ZX81 with about 128 rampacks.... thats not gonna suffer from Rampack wobble... it's gonna be Rampack topple ;)

millman ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 10:19 PM

As I seem to remember that checking the 64k ram, which I never had, took quite a while, with 2 mb that might have meant turn it on today if you wanted to use it tomorrow. Then came the VIC-20, the TI-99A, and the Apple IIC. I didn't really learn what frustration was until I got the IBM PC. Still frustrated.

millman ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2004 at 10:24 PM

(I can see I'm up against some heavy competition here. Yer a buncha real hard-core junkheap users.) Righto, Mac. But there's nothing like the challenge of getting out an ancient 5 1/4 floppy and trying to make it actually RUN. (The tape deck for the T/S 1000 gave up long before I quit using the computer, didn't take much longer to re-enter the program than it did to load of from tape.)

RHaseltine ( ) posted Wed, 28 January 2004 at 1:46 PM

I doubt it still works, but there's a 12K Acorn Atom around somewhere here. (Hi-res graphics - 192 by 256 monchrome!)
